Does anyone else experience this and do you know what it is?!

For as long as I can remember, I have occasionally got the odd spot on my face. It will come up quickly, be big, red, angry and itchy, but within a few hours, it vanishes with no trace. It will just be one spot (or thing that looks like a spot), and I know when it’s one that will last just a few hours rather than being a regular spot because it’s so itchy when it first appears.

Does anyone else experience this? Do you know what it is? I’ve tried googling it have never found an answer and I’m really curious as to what it could be!

Urticaria?

KalaniM · 05/10/2022 16:45

Allergic reaction, sounds like.

Urticaria?

Isn’t that more of a rash though? This is a singular ‘spot’.

I can feel one coming on right now which is why I posted, but it’s on my eyelid, so may not be able to post a picture that isn’t too identifying!

If it is, I have zero idea of what could bring it on. I’ve just been sitting at home working on my laptop, same as every day. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to it, but that does sound like the most likely explanation.
Its just so odd!

Molluscum contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum?

Had to Google that one, and in the pictures, it looks more like blisters, so I don’t think so…

Mine sort of looks like this, but only ever as one singular spot, so it would appear like the bit I’ve circled.

Allergy was my first thought. Definitely not molluscum - that takes months to go away and does not itch.

Have you tried anti histamines?

Dilbertian · 05/10/2022 17:07

I have allergies, and sometimes the reaction will appear like acne, not classic nettle rash.

No, I think because it always goes within a couple of hours or so anyway, I’ve never needed to. It also doesn’t happen as often as it used to, maybe only once or twice a year now whereas it used to be maybe once a month. It’s really not a big problem, just so odd!

I’ll get some antihistamines in, and next time it happens, I’ll see if it seems to make it go any quicker!

I get these all the time, esp on the side of my face. Just one raised, red itchy spot. They can be quite big. There for about 3 hours and vanish. They are hives. I have a high allergic profile(in my blood)but the only things I know I am allergic to are dust and pollen. My consultant says its odd as someone with my bloodwork is usually very allergic to something, maybe I just dont know what yet!

TheDutchHouse · 05/10/2022 17:13

Thank goodness this happens to others !
I can literally feel one popping up , usually on my face . I have realised it's a stress / nerves thing.. it can last between an hour to a day ...

Yes, exactly that!! It must be the same thing then - any idea what brings it on? It’s always in my face, and never more than the one spot. I have no idea whatsoever what it could be that’s triggering it.

Thank you all for your suggestions 🙂

Yes, I get these too, they have no centre, unlike normal spots. I think they're urticaria/allergy related. I usually put on a little antihistamine cream and they go away. I don't really know what triggers them, I get them on my face or neck.

I wonder if it could be stress related. I don’t feel particularly stressed when they come on, but you never know.

At least we know we’re not alone in this weirdness!

I wouldn't say I was particularly stressy but I've come to realise that if I'm worried about something that one will raise it head so to speak!

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 05/10/2022 17:24

Yep, me too, they feel similar to a bite, but i've not been bitten. It's very odd.

Happymama24 · 05/10/2022 17:31

When my daughter was younger she used to be sensitive to eggs. After eating eggs or products with eggs she would get one or 2 spots within half an hour and the would be gone again by end of day

mistermagpie · 05/10/2022 20:00

Yes I've had this, I know exactly what you mean! My ex husband used to get it too and we just called them a big red thing, like 'I've got one of those big red things again' and never investigated further, since they went away within a couple of hours.

Weird thing is, I split from him and moved into a new house and have never ever had one since. I wondered if we had dust mites or something that was causing it? Or maybe I was allergic to the husband...

It definitely doesn't seem to be anything I ate because I still eat all the same stuff, we both smoked at the time and I haven't since we split, but I can't see how that would be related!

MellowMelly · 05/10/2022 20:16

It sounds like what I get on my face too. Mine are definitely urticaria and I get them when I’m stressed but I also get idiopathic urticaria on my face which is where there is no known reason. They pop up, itch and go down in a few hours.
My daughter gets them a lot, some are related to her allergies. We just take an antihistamine.
