Interview outfit for warehouse job

PeekAtYou · 05/10/2022 10:14

I am going to an assessment day for a job in a warehouse as a picker/packer having previously only worked in offices with casual dress codes or wfh.
I'm not sure what to wear. I don't have a suit (and I'd rather not buy one) or smart shoes (trainers have been fine for my other jobs). I don't want to be over/under dressed compared to the other candidates and really need this second job.

Thanks for any advice

I'd go simple, smart and practical but not to suit level. Shoes comfortable but not trainers.

Trousers, blouse and shoes. You want them to know you're taking the job seriously and don't turn up looking like you think it'll be a doss.

You can never be over dressed for an interview for any role, good luck 😀

DONT TURN UP IN A BALL GOWN OP Grin

I think a suit would be overkill but I definitely wouldn't wear jeans or trainers. Black trousers, smart(ish) top / blouse and leather shoes or boots.

CheezePleeze · 05/10/2022 10:37

Smart casual but you'll need shoes/boots, not trainers.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 05/10/2022 10:47

Not a suit. This isn't just an interview they will also be setting you some tasks so you need to dress for the job, not for tge management. You need practical, smart-ish but easy to move in clothing. Look at what the shelf-stocking staff wear at supermarkets. Usually plain black trousers and a polo shirt. You coukd go slightly smarter with a fully buttoned shirt rather than polo shirt so long aa it is robust enough not to look messy if you have to do some physical stuff. You may be climbing up and down step ladders so make sure your shoes are sturdy - the kind of thing that school uniform codes approve of are usually ok.

But if it's an assessment day for a physical job, you need practical clothing, ie trousers and comfortable shoes and a smartish top. The pinterest link above is probably OK, but with some less 'out there' trousers and perhaps a darker top and shoes.

I'd be mindful that the items being handled could be heavy, dusty, on a racking that requires ladder access, so no skirts or light clothing and make sure you have socks on or with you in case they ask you to wear safety shoes.

Good luck OP.

You can never be over dressed for an interview

Oh, you can. I nearly didn’t get a job because I turned up in a pin stipe suit and heels. The job was a physical job, and I was a career changer. I couldn’t quite get my head round going for an interview in anything other than a smart suit, so I did. At the end of my interview, the guy said “I’m sorry, you sound great and you’re clearly knowledgable, which is just what we need, but I just can’t imagine you doing the job.” He looked meaningfully at my suit and shoes.

I explained that I did possess appropriate workwear, but this was an interview, so I wore an interview outfit. He agreed to give me a trial, and it was all ok. But he did tell me later that he’d pretty much written me off on sight, but was glad he’d continued with the interview despite initially thinking it was a waste of time!

I’d go smart casual. No trainers.

Dark jeans and t-shirt/jumper will be enough, trust me.

This is so untrue. Turn up in suit for software developer job interview and see 😂

I wouldn't employ you turning up to an interview in jeans and a T-shirt.

DP has got a few jobs after wearing jeans and T-shirts to interviews/assessment days. It depends on the job.

TokyoSushi · 05/10/2022 11:02

Black trousers, fairly smart top, plain shoes. You should probably be able to pick the whole outfit up from a supermarket or similar - good luck!

x2boys · 05/10/2022 11:04

My dh works in a warehouse he's always gone for smart when being interviewed not in a suit but smart shirt and trousers, no trainers .

inappropriateraspberry · 05/10/2022 11:30

If you're having to do practical/physical things, have they not advised on suitable clothing?

Blueberry40 · 05/10/2022 11:32

My son went for an interview for this type of role a few months ago in a shirt and trousers- he felt really overdressed but did get the job! I would say smart jeans and a polo shirt or something similar would be absolutely fine.

Soproudoflionesses · 05/10/2022 11:38

I used to work in a parcel company and one warehouse operative got the job literally because he turned up in a suit for his interview - we thought if he makes an effort there, it is a good start.

Do you hire for warehouse packing jobs?

Dark jeans, polo/ jumper/ shirt and sensible shoes will be absolutely fine - it's what I wore for a warehouse interview before. I'd imagine it'll be a group interview and there will be a number of applicants who will be dressed in varying stages of formality. You just want to show you have made an effort and are keen for the job. It definitely helps to dress in the direction of the job you want.

PeekAtYou · 09/10/2022 12:59

Thank you for the advice.
Im going in boots that I already own, slim joggers that will pass as business casual trousers and I bought a roll neck jumper.
Will update tomorrow with what others wore for people who might search on this topic.
The job is in an automatic (think that's the word) warehouse so the goods that need packing are delivered to the work station so there's no climbing and carrying.
