New mattress making me sweat buckets!

I bought a new mattress, an expensive one which I considered an investment in myself - good sleep, good support, etc. It's memory foam. I've only ever had springs before but have read and heard loads about the wonders of memory foam.
Oh my gosh, I've only had it for three nights so far and every night I am waking up literally drenched in sweat! Like, soaked to the bone. Wet nightclothes, wet sheet.
The mattress is cooking me! Is this normal for memory foam? Presumably it's going to start to smell awful fairly soon as I'm not sure how to stop sweating into it.
Ugh. Does anyone have advice or shared experience?

We tried a memory foam mattress once and I hated it. Became like sleeping on wet sand.

Did you buy it with a free trial period so you can return it?

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 05/10/2022 08:36

We bought a memory foam mattress and I found it unbearable! I was so sweaty, and live in a cold, old house etc.
We ended up sending it back.

countrygirl99 · 05/10/2022 08:37

DH bought a memory foam topper I lasted a week before insisting it went.

We had a memory foam mattress in a fancy holiday apartment once, it was horrendous. SO sweaty, even though it wasn’t even warm outside.

Camdenish · 05/10/2022 08:39

We have memory foam mattresses on the kids beds. If I ever spend a night in their beds I sweat buckets. I put a towel under me. Did you buy it online? Can you return it?

Squeezedsquash · 05/10/2022 08:40

My inlaws have one on their spare bed. Hate it.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 05/10/2022 08:41

Yeah, I can't stand them.

they know it's a problem, they advertise with cool layer or whatever, but just no.

send it back.

Letsrunabath · 05/10/2022 08:46

I knew from your heading it was a memory foam mattress. My in-laws have them on their spare beds, I can’t sleep on it so hot and sweaty. Send it back.

Afterfire · 05/10/2022 08:47

Can’t stand memory foam for this reason! Send it back.

StrawberryPot · 05/10/2022 08:52

Due to back problems I can only get a good night's sleep on memory foam mattresses. But I know what you mean about sweating. I only use a lightweight duvet and that seems to keep it under control .

Just the same experience here, so it went back. Vile things.

BarrelOfOtters · 05/10/2022 08:55

yep, struggled away with ours for 10 years. A wool duvet helped. But finally getting rid of it to get a wool or cotton mattress. DH loves it but he doesn’t sweat (weirdo).

prescribingmum · 05/10/2022 09:16

Return it for one made of natural materials if it's not too late to do so. Otherwise a wool topper will help get rid of the sweating.
There is no substitute for a good quality pocket sprung mattress made from natural materials, I feel like memory foam is an expensive con

GreenFly56 · 05/10/2022 09:23

We recently bought a simba pro and had the exact same problem. Returned it and went for an ikea one which is great.

BloodyHellKen · 05/10/2022 09:24

As others have already said it's the memory foam. It seems to soak up your body heat and then transmit it back to you. We recently stayed in a holiday cottage with memory foam mattresses. I woke up each night ridiculously warm and uncomfortable and I'm usually the sort of person who likes extra blankets on the bed.
At home we have a natural fibres sprung mattress with a separate memory foam topper and curiously this doesn't have the same heating effect.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 05/10/2022 09:33

Is your husband Prince Andrew @BarrelOfOtters 😁

OP, I'm the same with memory foam mattresses and toppers. I can't use a giant pillow either or I get a sweaty head!

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 05/10/2022 09:34

*foam pillow! No idea where the giant pillow came from.

Are you married to Prince Andrew? 😂

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 05/10/2022 16:55

Not just me then! I'm going to send it back. I'm very disappointed. Having never had memory foam before I expected it to be the most amazingly comfortable thing ever. Instead I'm just sweaty betty!

CrapBucket · 05/10/2022 16:58

I'm always cold. Somehow with a foam mattress topper, I was cold AND sweaty, delightful combination!

huffyhufferson · 05/10/2022 17:02

What make is your mattress?

Pineappleflowers · 05/10/2022 17:02

I had the same thing OP. Turns out sleeping on foam is a shit idea. I don’t understand how these ‘mattresses’ get such good reviews.

Find something as irganic as you can - mine has high wool content, plus a wool topper, which is brilliant.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 05/10/2022 17:05

Is it Tempur? I hated the one I slept on at a friend’s, hot, sweaty and difficult to turn over.
I have an Eve, it’s absolutely brilliant.

somanybooks · 05/10/2022 17:11

When we first got a memory foam topper about ten years ago I felt like this but after a while (about a month?) I seemed to adapt and it's not been a problem since apart from perimenopause night sweats, and I can't really blame it for that. It's been so comfy we've just got a new very firm mattress with another memory foam topper as I do find it the best combo for support and comfort.
