What fake stuff to buy in Turkey?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/10/2022 20:10

We booked to go to Turkey over half term ages ago and now it’s getting closer!

we’ve never been before but I quite like the look of going to some of the markets and haggling (not sure I’ll be very good at that though!)

is the fake stuff all really bad quality or is there anything worth keeping my eye out for? I’d quite like a handbag and a watch.

We import a lot of their clothes which are good quality. So I'd be looking for those. Also leather footwear, and of course spices. I tend to get those from a supermarket though.

I wouldn't risk surgery ever

Venuz · 05/10/2022 09:28

If you buy fake you are as bad as the gangmasters and sex slave drivers. Shame on you. And as someone with a sizeable collection of actual stuff, we spot it a mile off and laugh at you.

Pretty brave to start this thread on mumsnet, home of the pious, rider of the high horse.

I'm not really a handbag person but I got a fake adidas bumbag which I love 😃

Fake added as? Isn't that about a tenner new???

Hoppinggreen · 05/10/2022 09:47

I judge people who buy fake designer goods whereas I would never judge someone wearing cheap clothes .
I get it for kids who do it for Insta or whatever but not grown ups

You might as well buy the fakes to match your tacky attitude. Much of the 'actual stuff' isn't ethical either.

Why would you openly say you want to buy fakes? It’s morally reprehensible and funds criminals, sweatshops and no doubt some slave labour. It’s nothing anyone should ever set out to do.

This.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/10/2022 10:04

Please don’t try to haggle with professional hagglers 😁

Lolz at all the posters who seem to be under the illusion that genuine branded goods are manufactured ethically 🤣

They aren't part of a crime chain with drugs and people trafficking though

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/10/2022 10:10

Ahhh. Buying a bag which is possibly funding sex trafficking. All the lolz Confused

Slight derail but does anyone remember those naff tv shirts you could buy from Spain in the 80s on holiday and get them personalised? Like "Bob went to Salou 1987"?! Grin i bloody loved those

You think a proper business that has to pay for designers, advertising, HR, shops, staff, tax and insurance doesn’t at least try to have to be ethical, even if they’re not perfect? Anyone who knowingly buys fake goods is effectively a scammer and thief - they’re stealing from and scamming the real business, and funding crime, sweatshops, drugs and trafficking at the same time to boot.

I bought a mulberry fake in Thailand years ago because I liked the look of it. I wasn’t looking for a fake but it was a nice well made bag. I’d never pay the money for a real mulberry- I would never pay that money for a bag. It’s a complete waste. But why not get the look for less?

I doubt there’s much difference between production of fakes and other local goods. All this stuff about slavery etc sounds like crap and marketing from big overpriced brands.

I think a part of it is people who buy those brands like to feel they’re better than others because they can afford them. The fakes ruin that for them. if everyone can have them they don’t feel special anymore.

IMO these luxury brands should already be setting the standard not just trying to improve.

I agree, my post wasn't in support of fakes.

I don’t buy branded or designer gear di have no axe to grind in this game. But looking at it from the outside this is the disconnect - everyone can’t have “them”, because what they are having is a fake. However good a fake, or close to the real thing, it’s not the real thing. And the person buying it KNOWS it’s not the real thing because those high end designer brands do not sell through Turkish market stalls. Their friends and families know they aren’t buying real. So really, what’s the point?

also very scary that people are happy to turn a blind eye to organised crime and slavery links but then again there was a thread last week of people happy to buy from Shein because cheap clothes.🙄🙄

Everyone can’t have them though, if they could Fakes wouldnt exist.
If I buy designer good (rare) I will do it for myself. I don’t buy things that are obviously branded so it’s unlikely most people would know where they were from

puddingandsun · 05/10/2022 13:19

Brands (fake or real) are not going to make people think more of you.

Life is short. Value your resources (no need to buy overpriced) and value the planets resources (choose sustainable).

Dollyparton3 · 05/10/2022 13:44

Sometimes when I'm bored on my commute I like to play "spot the fake" and it's easy. If you're carrying a Louis Vuitton bag but wearing dirty Tesco trainers, a coat from Primark and leggings from Asda, the chances are that the bag isn't real.

Someone I know buys shady gear for her granddaughter every year and her grand daughter plasters her "new Prada" all over her public Instagram. Along with her very tacky bedroom furniture, orange tan or her £2,000 car. It stands to reason that if you have a very cheap car you won't be spending £1800 on a Prada handbag.

OnaBegonia · 05/10/2022 13:45

I will never understand the entitlement of ppl to come onto a post to pontificate, OP didn't ask for your opinion right or wrong, she asked for suggestions on what to buy.

And the suggestion by most people is “nothing” and they gave their reasons why. It’s hardly “pontificating” to mention real-world issues and abuses. It’s pointing out a real and serious problem that destroys lives.

Malfi · 05/10/2022 16:04

Also, nothing speaks more of entitlement than someone whose desire for a cheap knockoff fake is more important to them than crime, theft, slavery and the misery of others.

OnaBegonia · 05/10/2022 17:54

@Malfi
The OP didn't ask for opinions on the right or wrong of it, but as per MN feel the need to lecture.
