Give me a tip you learnt from your grandparents.

@heartbroken22

yes. Ie teenagers wearing a jumper in the house!

Pung · 04/10/2022 08:07

What, like: always do everything the boss wants so that you don't get thrown out of your tied cottage?

gogohmm · 04/10/2022 08:09

If you mean wearing jumpers and not wasting food, never stopped

Learn how to use a hot water bottle.

The whole house doesn't need to be warm, just the people in it.

How to make a good pot of soup

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 04/10/2022 08:10

Heavy curtains, draught excluders, woollen jumpers - and maybe even longjohns!

picklemewalnuts · 04/10/2022 08:10

Don't buy stuff because someone is trying to sell it to you.

Don't replace stuff that still works.

Helenloveslee4eva · 04/10/2022 08:14

hoard stuff but appropriately 😂

it’s good making jam etc but if you go buy Pinterest worthy jars it costs you !

layers , thermals etc. I never stopped 😂

Nicpem1982 · 04/10/2022 08:23

How to make a good pudding to fill everyone up 😋

I recently gave this topic a fair bit of thought actually, I cook most evenings but I tend to cook what we fancy not what is seasonal of necessarily sensible with the rise in food costs I felt I needed to rethink what we were eating.

I bought myself a second hand copy of the dairy book of family cookery as it's full of traditional recipes using simple ingredients that are filling tasty.

If the ground and atmosphere are dry then put your washing outside to dry. Even in the dead of winter.
my Grandmother’s advice has saved me hundreds of pounds in tumble drying costs

Always share housework equally. That’s what my grandparents taught me. Dm said that when she went to her friends houses, their dads would sit around while their mums did all the work - not her dad. Grandpa always did his fair share, and said he’d sit down and relax when grandma did.

I suspect that’s not what you meant, but it’s a lesson some people still have yet to learn, based on the relationships board!

AnyRandomName · 04/10/2022 08:37

GP1: have fun whilst you can. Soup before a meal stretches the food further.

GP2: never marry a weak man.

GP3: how to entertain bishops and an excellent cheese straw recipe

GP4: don't waste anything. Enjoy the small things.

Many people today need to learn when and how to apply home remedies, because calling the doctor in, was very expensive in my grandparents day, before the NHS! From what I hear, too many people nowadays go to the GP or A & E expecting a magic pill to make them better instantly.

Dannexe · 04/10/2022 08:43

Well it’s quite possible we’ll be looking at sitting around the fire and reading by candlelight at this rare

LadyKenya · 04/10/2022 08:44

Waste nothing. Learn how to cook cheap, healthy, filling meals.

BlueG4 · 04/10/2022 08:46

"Always make sure you are dressed nicely before you go out" (I still follow this)

"Keep everyone happy"

"Eat the fat on your meat, it's the best part"

"Have a jar of dripping in the fridge, it's nice on bread"

"Enjoy the small things". My nan used to sit in the garden to paint, with the budgie next to her so he could enjoy the fresh air too. He was excellent company!

Put simply - if the path is dry the clothes will dry.

Families sit together in one warm room.

Hot water bottles or electric blankets for the bed not a warm bedroom.

Choose seasonal fresh vegetables but don't forget frozen veg which is reasonably priced and just as nutritious.

This is not my grandparents' wisdom but my own childhood and that of my daughter when she was small i.e. I am the grandparent.

What we shouldn't have that I did is ice inside the windows in the morning as double glazing is now more usual. Also we tend to have showers now which are more economical and more pleasant than having a shallow bath in a cold bathroom - and we have our toilets inside.

floorida · 04/10/2022 08:47

i'm not giving up the washing machine or dish washer.

victoriacrosshairs · 04/10/2022 08:47

Some people never stopped living like that. What are they going to do?

Coastalcreeksider · 04/10/2022 08:49

Always wear a vest under your outer clothes that covers your lower back, (I wear camisole tops), you will be warmer.

From nan and mum from a very early age and I always have.

Needmorelego · 04/10/2022 08:49

Live like my grandparents....
Live in a council house that was the norm for working class families to live in and was well maintained by the council.
Only one parent needs to have a full time job as the wage covers everything.
Have a massive back garden so you can grow your own fruit and vegetable and hardly ever need to buy any from the shops.
Not need to have a car because public transport was reliable and frequent.

How much I fantasize about living like that.

mountainsunsets · 04/10/2022 08:51

My grandma would have the heating on full blast in the middle of an Australian summer as it was a "different kind of heat".

I suspect that's not the kind of tip you meant though 😉

FiveMins · 04/10/2022 08:53

Do a 10 minute stretch routine everyday in the morning.

Eat cake daily

Georgeskitchen · 04/10/2022 08:53

Stop buying new clothes every week. Start using charity shops. Stop buying children new toys on demand. Christmas and birthdays only. Walk instead of driving everywhere. Stop wasting money on junk food and takeaways.
Stop replacing things that are perfectly servicable
