Feel like death (cold/flu), have to fly home from a funeral tomorrow

Literally just need sympathy and a response from anyone awake!

Grandma's funeral yesterday. I have the cold from hell - blocked up, thumping head, occasional earache, throat is swollen and achy and cough-y, I (clearly) can barely sleep. Genuinely feel so generally ill/exhausted that I feel nauseous. Managed most of yesterday with breaks in bed.

I have to get up in 2 hours, drive a hire car 1.5hours, return it, check in for flight, find some sort of food as a coeliac sufferer in an airport (frankly, always miserable even if feeling 100%), fly home (within UK so not terrible) then thankfully I live near the airport.

I am glad I came to support my parent but fucking hell I feel awful right now and wish I was at home. The worst thing is I know I'll make it home etc etc but I'm still going to feel like shit warmed up for a few days!

I have cold and flu medication, and ibuprofen, and cough sweets. I'm dosed up to my eyeballs during the day.

To top it off my period started totally unexpectedly last night and I have a condition meaning it's generally heavy and painful.

Please indulge a woman feeling very sorry for herself right now!

It did make me smile! I had the flu as a teenager and that's definitely my experience of it - well, actually I was in bed half hallucinating for three days so I probably wouldn't have even seen the note, or it would have been in my imagination. I might feel rough but it's nothing like those three days were at least!

Hopefully you can rest propped up at home?
Can your OH make you some soup? Chicken and veg is good for colds. Or any soup. Blended may be best?

flipperdoda · 04/10/2022 05:39

I can indeed, dreaming of the reclined sofa and a blanket right now. Daydreaming - obviously. I wish I could dream!

He will play me with hot drinks and whatever food (within reason) I ask for, if it's healthy anyway. T-7 hours or so...

In other news I'm in the process of (not purposefully) waking everyone up by packing the last few things and getting out of the house. Unavoidable unfortunately! Will be good to get the drive done.

Hope you get to the airport safely. My only advice is to break the journey down into stages rather than think about the whole journey then congratulate yourself when you finish one then move on to the next. Far more manageable in chunks than an 8-9 hour trip

CuriousMama · 04/10/2022 05:55

Best wishes. Get well soon 💐

Good luck OP. My suggestion is to do a bit of Maths, I used to get through awful visits to my ex ILs like this. Project forward to the moment you can sink under the duvet and how many hours it is. Do fractions or percentages from your start point, eg “I’m a third of the way through”, “Only 40% to go now”. Celebrate the halfway mark (maybe not full-on Macarena). Alternatively (or additionally) pretend you’re directing a film about this situ and imagine the camera shots and background music. If there is anyone extra-annoying at the airport, sit near them so they get your germs 🤣

I do hope you feel a great deal better soon.

@flipperdoda

hope you trip is not to painful but please wear a mask to help stop others getting it

FiveShelties · 04/10/2022 06:31

Will the airline allow you to board?

ememem84 · 04/10/2022 06:54

Wishing you get well soon! Hope the travel isn’t too arduous. How long is the flight?

I remember doing similar a few years ago. Not fun. But you’ll get through it.

sunlovingcriminal · 04/10/2022 07:08

Oh no, poor you. I am literally just getting to the tail end of a stinking cold too. It has been a real bitch of a cold this one 😞 .

Let us know when you get to the airport. One step at a time. Luckily you can just get through checkin, find some food and then slump.

You're a good 'un for making it to the funeral.

greenacrylicpaint · 04/10/2022 07:18

the airline might not let you board with obvious cold symptoms.
so be prepared in case that happens.

sympathies, that's such a bad timing.

AllLopsided · 04/10/2022 07:18

Wishing you safe travels OP, thinking of you.

Maybe pick up a spray decongestant at the airport - should help you breathe better on the flight and might help your ears feel better too. I always feel better if I can get a bit of relief from the blocked up/streaming nose cycle.

DrDetriment · 04/10/2022 07:22

I'm so sorry you feel so bad but please consider cancelling your flight. It isn't really fair to others to spread your virus to them on the plane.

flipperdoda · 04/10/2022 07:35

I've made it to the airport fine.

They let me board on the way so I doubt the symptoms on the way back will cause me to be banned. It's a nasty cold...but it is "just" a cold. I'm actually feeling a little better now I've been moving, I think a lot of is it tiredness. The plane is only around an hour.

I was waiting for the cancel your flight stuff! I get it. I seriously considered coming in the first place, but the decision is made and I'm being as sensible as I can.

FiveShelties · 04/10/2022 07:42

I wish you a speedy recovery, but to be honest I would not be amused if I was sat next to you especially on a long flight.

flipperdoda · 04/10/2022 12:12

I am home and in bed. I think I was actually worse yesterday - I feel about the same but it's the build up of lack of sleep if that makes sense. I didn't cough once on the plane, blew my nose about four times, otherwise sat there quietly with a mask on and didn't touch anything/anyone!

Now deaf in one ear from the plane landing which I'm sure will settle in time but wanted to say thank you for the company in the middle of the night. Everything seems worse when it's 3am, you can't sleep, and you're not upright!

That's good to hear. Get well soon 🙂

sunlovingcriminal · 04/10/2022 15:21

Get well soon @op . Lots of rest and fluids!

BasiliskStare · 04/10/2022 16:10

excellent news @flipperdoda - tiredness always make evertything seem worse . Sorry about my misspelling of flue / flu - I have a plumbing problem ( the house not me :) ) and the thing autocorrected - I can spell - ha ha . But also for other reasons could not sleep. I do wish you well & I bet after a decent sleep you will feel so much better & yes things in the wee small hours always feel worse - But you are safely back and that is A Good Thing. Good work re the plane and as others have said fluids and rest and I do keep a stash of lemsip max here. All best to you Basilisk x

CalmingRoseQuartz · 04/10/2022 23:08

You must be so relieved to be home again. Hope you soon feel better, OP.
