What to do about money I found

I found some money (£40) on a grassy verge on an A road. The nearest police station is 20 miles away. Do I hand it in there?

What for the next police station piss up?
I'd keep it

shoplifteroftheworld · 03/10/2022 18:19

If it were me I'd mention it on a local Facebook page. The claimant would need to say how much they'd lost, what notes and where they lost it. If they seemed to be the rightful owner then I'd return it. If you hear nothing just keep it. It's happened to us all at some point.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/10/2022 18:20

We found £100 recently and handed it into the gym whose car park it was in. We're pretty sure the staff will have it if not claimed!

ifonly4 · 03/10/2022 18:27

I'd post on social media, or a local newsagent might let you put a free advert in their window. Assuming there are no claimants, it'd be nice to give it to a charity.

heinztomatosoup · 03/10/2022 18:27

There is an online reporting method for your local police. You can inform them and then if no one claims it within certain time you get to keep it. Conscience clear and no need to traipse to police station.

Namesahchanging · 03/10/2022 18:29

I don't have FB and wouldn't bother to set up a profile for 40quid tbh. I would feel bad for whoever lost it but I think I would just keep it under the circumstances. You could spend half buying food for any homeless you come across, or even pay for someone's small shop if you can afford to. Otherwise see it as good Karma that's come around x

ChagSameachDoreen · 03/10/2022 18:30

Oh just keep it.

Seeleyboo · 03/10/2022 18:33

Years ago i found over 9k in an envelope. This was before SM etc. I put ads in shop windows. Anyway i kept it on my bookcase. About a year later i was outside a shop near to a well known building society and two elderly ladies were talking. Now make sure you put that money in your bag properly this time. Don't want you losing any more money do we. Other lady.....i know it was such alot of money but life goes on and my husband got his headstone in the end even if it is later than i would have liked.
The rest is history and a happy ending

TokyoTen · 03/10/2022 18:36

I don't believe police handle lost property any more so I don't think they'll be interested. You could try (a) posting on local social media (b) donating it (c) keeping it.

bravotango · 03/10/2022 18:37

Seeleyboo amazing story! I found £400 once, handed it in to the police and got it back after 6 weeks because noone had claimed it

This is an amazing story. You should have contacted a newspaper.

OP, I'm usually all for handing money in but I'm not sure I would bother in this case. I'd put something on the local Facebook. I would just mention roughly where the money was found then see if anyone claims it.

JudithHarper · 03/10/2022 18:39

Either keep it or give it to a local charity.

Jazzydrops · 03/10/2022 18:41

Although £40 is a lot of money, I would assume if I had lost it, then it was lost as I would assume most people would keep it if they found it. Unless you live in a small village where you could ask around locally, I would suggest you either keep it or give it to charity.

This is just so heartwarming

HairyMothballs · 03/10/2022 18:42

If it was just cash, keep it. If it was in a wallet/purse with I.D., hand it in somewhere and put a post on FB. If in a wallet with no I.D., put a post on FB and see if anyone claims it in a week - if not, keep it.

QuitWhileAhead · 03/10/2022 18:46

@Seeleyboo Was there a reason you didn't hand the money into the police? 👀

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 03/10/2022 18:56

In reality
A) spend it
B) give it to charity

There is no police station nearby. The chances of finding the real owner are negligible

Verytirednow · 03/10/2022 18:59

I found £80 in cash in our local lane.Put ot on FB and the guy who lost it was able to say what the notes were and where he had been cycling..Happy ending!

If instead of putting ads in windows, you’d handed it in to local police like you’re supposed to and the lady had contacted local police (as I expect she did), she wouldn’t have worrying for ages about not being able to afford a gravestone for her dead husband 😐

Erm...you'd put on Social Media or in a shop window, "Have you lost £40 in cash"?

I almost WANT the OP to do this and report back in a week!

Suzi888 · 03/10/2022 19:22

Just keep it.

allboysmum3 · 03/10/2022 19:27

It's £40 not £400. The likely hood of finding the actual owner without having others try to claim it's their's is very slim!
