Cursing in the workplace

Is this the norm nowadays? There’s one woman I work with and she’s always swearing about something.

this morning she walked in, her computer was slow or something and she just blurted out “this bloody piece of shite”

I mean, we all have days like that. I curse myself but I try not to outside my home.

It doesn’t offend me but it does get a bit tiring listening to it when it’s “fuck this, fuck that” quite regularly.

anyone else’s workplace like this?

Yep

Depends on the industry I think, but mine is full of fucks.

I don’t mind myself.

Are you from the US? (you said cursing), in which case the UK is a lot swearier. I jokingly called a colleague a cunt on a conference call not realising our US clients were already on the line. Mercifully they thought it was funny.

No I’m in the UK. I’ve always called it ‘cursing’ though!

I'm no pearl clutcher and swear a lot but calling someone a cunt would be a step too far for me...

My colleague says everything is a 'shitshow' or 'shit-ass'

It's a bit distasteful, actually (get me)

idonotmind · 03/10/2022 19:56

Yeah cunt is too far

Everything else goes

I don't appreciate being sworn at, others being sworn at, or in front of children, but swearing in general doesn't bother me.

HMSSophia · 03/10/2022 19:59

I have adhd. A bit like how I write - lots of dash, parentheses and sub clauses are the norm because lots of things are going on and I like energy and movement - I talk. So swearing is part of the colour, the rhythm and movement of how I talk. I'm extremely erudite and articulate but fuck me sometimes you just need to add some badass spice to things

CuriousCatfish · 03/10/2022 20:04

You would need your smelling salts if you heard me swearing at my piece of shit slow computer at work.

milawops · 03/10/2022 20:07

Depends on your workplace. Where I work fuck is practically used as punctuation.

Heatherjayne1972 · 03/10/2022 20:24

Depends surely
in my place swearing ( anything stronger than ‘goodness me’) isn’t allowed. - in the staff room there’s more ‘language’ but generally we don’t swear much at all

my partner is a lorry driver and there are no words they won’t say - and say it frequently
‘see you next Tuesday’ is extremely commonplace as is the command to ‘go forth and multiply’

eurochick · 03/10/2022 20:29

I don't think most people were brought up with it being ok to swear at home but not outside. That seems odd.

I'm going to sound a bit of a dick now but I've found the higher up I get the more sweary it is and the more people are comfortable being themselves. I now work for an international platform and swear at will without any real thought about it because it's who I am and how I express myself. Obvs I would never do it in external meetings etc, but what I'm saying is you may feel comfortable one way, but others feel comfortable another. When I was first starting out I was in small local businesses and I was often chastised for my accent being thick or using different phrasing or idioms to the mainstream there. There i daren't swear for fear of repercussion. I feel it's a bit old fashioned and stiff upper lip to expect people to tone down their way of expressing themselves. But that's just me.
