My neighbour spends all day on the phone

And I can hear every word. We live in a semi and even when she is in her lounge downstairs I can hear her in my bedroom upstairs even over my TV.

She is a very petite lady with the loudest voice and it’s driving me insane. It’s all day everyday. Don’t know who the hell she talks to every day.

I try to drown her out with tv/radio but I can still hear her.

She's probably working.
Get some soundproofing.

vodkaredbullgirl · 03/10/2022 15:10

wfh

MichelleScarn · 03/10/2022 15:11

Wfh am assuming.

boogieboogie · 03/10/2022 15:13

Ah that is annoying, it's a shame because there's not much you can do about it, she's in her house and she's speaking, presumably not shouting, so it does sound like your walls are thin.
Could you afford some sound proofing?
I used to get mad at our old neighbour for her daughter banging around like an elephant at 10pm, we also had a problem with cigarette smoke as well so we moved to a detached house and never looked bad tbh.. sorry I know that's not a big help!

Acheheadache · 03/10/2022 15:13

But if she’s WFH she must be literally screaming down the phone to her colleagues all day. I WFH too and just talk in a regular voice. How can someone maintain that legal of screaming ALL day everyday?

Go and speak to her. Tell her nicely. She's probably not aware you can hear her. Her hearing might be getting progressively worse and she is shouting to compensate and might not realise.

Or her previous neighbours might have been hard of hearing so not noticed anything.

Either way, talk to her.

Bestcatmum · 03/10/2022 15:14

I expect she's running a sex line.
Put a glass to the wall and let us know - we need to know.

Acheheadache · 03/10/2022 15:16

I haven’t gone round because as someone rightfully said she’s in her own home screaming down the phone. Annoying but not illegal. I lived in a terrace before buying this semi and never heard this sort of noise before.

Acheheadache · 03/10/2022 15:17

She’s young so doubt she is hard of hearing, I mean she could be or more likely just a very loud person who just talks loudly ALL the time.

Just because she's doing something thats annoying not illegal, doesn't mean you can't ask her not to do it!

How do you know she is not hard of hearing. It doesn't only happen when you get old.

If you are wfh does your employer not give you noise cancelling headphones? My employer provides these to discourage distraction by background noise etc

ILoveYoga · 03/10/2022 15:58

Even bring you g, she can indeed be hard if hearing and just because she is young, not realise she is hard of hearing any may need hearing aids

advise her that you can hear her perhaps d en giving examples just do she knows you can hear her.

CushyCushions · 03/10/2022 16:07

Mental health issues ...she might not be on the phone ...

AriettyHomily · 03/10/2022 16:10

Is she a project manager by any chance? All the PMs I work with in construction seem to feel the need to below ALL THE TIME and they can't sit on the phone, they have to wander around or pace back and forth.

I had a sort of similar ish problem
I told the guy, he didn’t care

next time I told him the chat he had with his girlfriend was really interesting and quoted the key parts of what he said.

he found his volume button after that.

Worriedaboutethics · 03/10/2022 16:13

@Acheheadache

i had a town house once and could hear everything. Was built before the rules changed something like 2003/4z

in a one built in 2008 now and can’t hear a thing.

so I think you need to tell her.

maybe she is using a headset that makes one talk louder?

Abracadabra12345 · 03/10/2022 16:14

My neighbour wfh and he bellows so I feel your pain. I think it’s worth mentioning that they may not be aware you can hear them, because they usually don’t

Thatboymum · 03/10/2022 16:16

I’m not old to my knowledge I’m 30 and I’m wfh and I’m potentially loud as I’m deaf in one ear after having meningitis a few years ago so I’m always paranoid I’m shouting , I suppose that she isn’t aware she’s loud and could be a number of reasons why she is

MogHog · 03/10/2022 16:18

If she is wfh and she has noise cancelling headphones on she may not realise how loud she is. I had to turn off the NC in my headset as I ended up talking really loud without realising

Yep, same here.

I couldn’t hear myself because of my headphones and I didn’t realise I was shouting my way through meetings until DH was off one weekday (he works out of the house). He was downstairs and could hear every word.

Thankfully our walls are thicker than our floors so I wasn’t bothering the neighbour - I checked with her and she’s not the type to lie to spare my feelings Grin

Sunnytwobridges · 03/10/2022 16:49

I'm hard of hearing and my voice carries so everyone thinks I talk loud even when I try not to. I'm sure I drive my DD crazy when she's home and I"m working from home cause when I'm home I don't try to modulate my voice at all. She probably can't help it, but when I was in the office, people talking would get on my nerves so I understand how you feel.

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 03/10/2022 16:54

She may not be aware. I wasn't aware until my neighbours teams call tone went off and I thought it was my own.

Have a chat with her

Yep, this. She could be working in a CC. I spend a few hours on the phone each day to a Govt dept and it DH told me I speak louder when calling them.

EmmaH2022 · 03/10/2022 19:42

What is a CC please?
