Anyone’s electricity bills not going crazy?

ThatsNotMyCrown · 03/10/2022 13:19

I want to start by saying this isn’t a boast post.

I keep seeing everyone saying their electricity bills are sky rocketing to exorbitant levels, but mine haven’t. I don’t have gas, I have oil (which has gone ridiculously expensive) but my monthly electricity bills have barely changed. Everywhere I look it’s in the press that bills are going to be thousands of pounds, people on Facebook are talking about washing clothes in their bathtubs room save on bills. People on here saying they make £60,000 a year but can’t afford the lights on. But is this for everyone? I can’t work out if I’m the odd one out that my electricity bills haven’t gone crazy, or if it’s just that the people who are speaking out are the ones who have the issue and most people don’t and aren’t entering the discussion?
like I said, I’m not boasting, I’m just trying to work out if I need to start panicking about my bills for the future?

They actually put my dd down this month due to the £67 discount. Dual fuel account

NoMichaelNo · 03/10/2022 16:04

Compared to Friday our electricity price has basically doubled, it was £2 a day on average but now we’re hitting £4 a day.

We use gas for heating which hasn’t kicked in yet.

We’re on a 3 year fix due to end in August 2023. We will allow friends and family to spend time in our house and cook for them over the winter - we are normally quite frugal but will turn the heating on more if others are struggling to afford it and we can help. We will also donate our £400 to the food bank.

Oh my goodness you're so lovely x

The bills only increased on Saturday so if you pay by direct debit look out for the end of October.

They are on average double last October and about a third more than April - even with the government help. My smart meter definitely showed a big increase comparing Friday and Sunday.

As lots of people said, it's best to give Meter readings or have a smart meter so you are not going off estimated readings.

Some people have flex in their budget to cope with a 100% increase in a year but others don't and cutting back and being cold is miserable.

Heatherbell1978 · 03/10/2022 16:19

Surely it all depends what tariff you're on? I'm on a 2 year fixed which I took out a year ago so I'm paying the same as I was last year. I'm worried about what that will jump to in a years time do trying to be a bit frugal now to build up credit for then.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 03/10/2022 16:24

Variable and mines only gone up about 15 a month in the last year for gas and electric combined. No change in usage. Smart metered but i always check and submit readings too.

WoodlandPM · 03/10/2022 16:34

My tariff is 'standard variable'

This thread has been nice and positive instead of the usual panic, doom & chaos.

Thanks @ThatsNotMyCrown 😊

My gas/elec company are pushing for me to reduce my DD. We have a healthy credit and with the £66 from the government and the cap in place, it looks like we're paying more than we need to even with the price increases. Not on a fixed rate. We used a lot less than normal during the summer I think, as barely touched the tumble dryer because the weather has been so good. Fewer meals using the oven maybe? Not sure, but either way, I'm not anticipating having to do anything really to reduce what we use.

Itisbetter · 31/10/2022 08:23

Sorry I know this has gone quiet but like many our bill came in this morning. Mysteriously it appears to be less than expected not more. Does everyone else get their £66 after the bill is due to be paid so it is expected to sit in the account till Nov?

Bemyclementine · 01/11/2022 18:04

The £66 is deducted from my direct debit with eon.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 13/12/2022 11:19

Mine sre still averaging less than £100 pm for both.....but we're also capped until November next year.

xogossipgirlxo · 13/12/2022 11:33

Mine have gone up, but nowhere near the stories where people say "oh I don't know how I could afford paying bills when on low wage or benefits. We are SO privileged that DH and I are on good combined income. My house gas&electric costs me £1000pm and we don't even put heating on and we only have beans on toast for tea". It got expensive, yes, but we don't sit in cold (thermostat reduced to 18 degrees at night and 20 during the day, we put more if we fancy, like 20.5-21). We aren't rich, we are very mediocre family, but somehow magically manage 🙄I am on variable tariff too, and don't pay criminal direct debits. I just pay what I use. I expect £400 bill for last 3 months (£66 not included).

Heatherbell1978 · 13/12/2022 11:36

I keep seeing these kinds of posts - surely it all depends on your tariff? Some people are paying more than others. I fixed last September for 2 years so I'm paying the same as I did last winter. In Sep 2023 when I move to a new tariff I'll pay more.

3WildOnes · 13/12/2022 13:50

@xogossipgirlxo you are expecting a £400 bill for three months of gas and electricity? Despite having your heating set to 18 at night and 20 in the day, so on 24/7??
Your are either going to get a nasty shock when your bill comes or you must live in the most insanely well insulated house.
My heating is set to 18 in the day and off at night. I am expecting a £600 bill for December alone. My house is old and draughty with little insulation.

Fuwari · 13/12/2022 14:17

I'm on pre payment meters and my electricity cost has dropped! This is because this time last year there were 3 adults here all day every day, computers going, more washing and so on. Now it's just me for the majority of the day. One other adult evenings and weekends. I'm spending less than I was last year, even with the increase. I was quite shocked just how much it dropped.

DashboardConfessional · 13/12/2022 14:26

I keep nervously checking my app but it's sitting at about £135 a month for gas and electric (usage) for Oct and Nov. We used to pay £80 DD which covered us all year. So yes it's more, but not panic stations more, and I don't understand why my friends who claim to be on similar tarrifs are seeing £10 a day on their smart meters.

Anna8089 · 12/12/2023 21:57

At this time last year we went from 35 a week prepayment metre to £140 a week to heat one room . I don't understand how others is so cheap.
