Advice on washing coats to remove 'teen sweat' smell

StopFeckingFaffing · 03/10/2022 12:45

DS17 has 2 coats and both have a very strong odour of teen BO

One is a North Face waterproof which I don't want to put through the wash as likely to make it less waterproof

The other is a puffa style coat which I don't want to put through wash as I know from a previous experience with a coat belonging to DD that the stuffing in these type of coats goes all clumpy if you wash them in the washing machine

No stains or marks so they don't appear dirty but both smell grim. Any advice on best way to wash?

Honestly if you can't put them through the wash they will continue to stink.

You can put the puffer through the washer then air dry it on a hanger and then fluff it back into shape in the tumbler but don't let it get too dry or it may shrink

WobbieBilliams · 03/10/2022 12:51

You need to use those drying balls in the washing machine/tumble dryer - this really helps stop the clumping

You can wash puffa jackets if you tumble dry on low with dryer balls to break up the clumps. I use felted wool dryer balls from Amazon, I find they last longer than the plastic

ImAvingOops · 03/10/2022 12:52

What if you don't have a dryer though?

Wallywobbles · 03/10/2022 12:53

Ammonia on the pits. Then wash immediately I believe.

StopFeckingFaffing · 03/10/2022 12:54

Thanks. I've never heard of 'dryer balls' so will look on Amazon!

I do have a tumble dryer in the garage but only really use it for towels and bedding in winter

Definitely dryer balls, I use natural wool ones. I've found the more I wash my puffers the more they can handle getting back into shape.
I also recommend rinsing them and letting them soak for a bit before washing with bio powder

mrsjimhopper · 03/10/2022 12:56

Nik wax and TNF do their own washing detergent. You can also buy reproofing detergents. Read instructions as you might need to clean washer drawers as some cannot have traces of fabric softener on them.

The puffer wash as delicate with woolite and then tumble dry on low and shake regularly and put Those dryer balls in and a dry towel.

There are lots of YT videos on this as there is a community of people who like outdoor clothing and I am married to one.

Hang them on the line for a few days first, this should get rid of the smell much better than washin

if not though dry clean

nomoreflyingfucks · 03/10/2022 13:04

What's the north face fabric? Eg gortex or hy-vent? Nik-wax do special detergent and wash-in water proofer for technical fabrics. They also do a special detergent for wool and down.
Most down jackets can be tumbled, it only clumps when wet, just regularly take out, shake and stick in the dryer again, or line dry and shake out at regular intervals like you would a down pillow /duvet.

Just be away the Northface jacket will be better lined dried and will come out of your machine soaking wet, so make sure you have a bucket to slop it into, or you'll have a lovely puddle of water on your floor, and somewhere it can drip freely on a line/ clothes horse.

What if you don't have a dryer though?

Send it to the cleaners then. No other choice really

nomoreflyingfucks · 03/10/2022 13:10

Dry cleaning generally isn't recommended for waterproof fabrics as the process is damaging to the waterproof coating / layer (depends on manufacturing process)
Check the garment labels before washing, and agree with pp about not using fabric softener.

justasking111 · 03/10/2022 13:14

Buy reproofing spray. Wash, air dry out doors, tumbler cool then Spray

Hang up on a line, with a down coat line drying, you just have to shake vigorously at regular intervals (it's quite a good work outGrin) and hang back up again until it's dry.

I’ve replumped puffer jackets with a couple of tennis balls in the dryer if you have any about it’ll save buying dryer balls.
