Is this benefit fraud?

DD’s ex flat mate (dd moved out last week) has told dd that she is claiming universal credit based on dd still living in the flat. Dd has asked her not to, but has been told it’s already done.

I have no idea what this means for dd, and what, if anything, she should do about it.

If ex flatmate is the sole person on the tenancy and has your dd down as a non dependent then it would work to her detriment as she'd have a non dependent deduction on her rent element if dd is over 21 so I can't see any reason why she would do this? If they were down as joint tenants I also can't see as it would make any difference or benefit her in any way?

AmIThatMam · 02/10/2022 23:43

Unless they are/were a
couple it shouldn’t make any difference

It would also work to ex flatmates detriment in regards to council tax reduction.

As far as she knows the claim is based on three people living in the flat, so not partners or dependents.

I’m trying to work out how my neighbour who is on full UC affords nice cars, furniture and is currently on her 2nd foreign holiday this year and I work 40 hrs a week with no benefits can just about cover the bills - is it better to give up and go on benefits than slogging away week in week out?

GettingStuffed · 07/07/2023 09:19

When we were on benefits my in-laws used to buy us holidays and stuff like that.

I can't see how UC is better for her claiming that your DD still lives there. Unless it was social housing. Were they a couple ?

@Iris5 This thread is from October. Did you go out your way to find a benefits thread to start bashing?
