Working from home

MissRp · 02/10/2022 22:07

Hello!
I have been a stay at home mum for a few years but with the cost of living crisis, I really need to go back to work. As the children are still little and I have no childcare, ideally I would work from home.
I just feel so overwhelmed and don’t know where to start!
Are there any particular websites that recruit for wfh? Where do you find these jobs?
Sorry, I know it sounds so silly but the whole thing is making me anxious and I would really love any pointers.
Thank you

As others have said it is pretty much impossible to work and do childcare at the same time.
On the odd occasion I have to do it I'm neither a good parent or employee.

Look in the charity sector. Charity Jobs are so much more flexible and laid back.

Self employment might be your solution. You could set up as a VA (virtual assistant) and offer a set number of hours a week. My friend does this during her baby's nap times and after bedtime. She does 15 hours a week this way and is building up a client base. Mostly she sets up spreadsheets, inputs data, writes bid applications etc.

freelancing is definitely possible in your situation. Sites like upwork etc are a good place to start looking.

Also wfh and need to have childcare. Cant even have a child at home ill whilst working 😪 what about doing like Avon or body shop? Its usually popular for Xmas. Could you not get an evening or weekend part time job when partner is home? Care companies are desperate for people. Could do retail, hospitality etc.

This is the worst advice. Please do not join a MLM like the two mentioned above. You will rarely make money, and in 99% of cases you will be worse off.

If you have admin skills there are plenty of wfh jobs around. Have a look on Indeed. But you will need childcare. Have a look at Childminders in your local area. Even if you rely on UC, you will be better off working than not.

OP this isn't a dig at you, because if you don't know, I guess you don't know, but I'm genuinely shocked by how many people think WFH means you don't need childcare.

oh this, and the "flexible working" which means you can't get hold of anyone in the middle of the afternoon because they've all gone out to do the school run!

1982mommaof4 · 03/10/2022 21:31

Go onto indeed and filter remote working. How young are your children OP?

stockpilingallthecheese · 03/10/2022 21:35

Happy to see the anti mlm posts on this thread as people in your situation are exactly the type of people that mlms prey on!!

OP how many kids do you have and what age? What are the options for childcare versus what you could earn? Do you have a partner and what hours do they work, that you could fit some work around?

It's hard to advise as you've not given much detail.

Sorry for the lack of info.
I have 4 kids, they are all at primary school so I do have some childcare in that sense but nothing in the holidays and I don’t drive so have to factor in considerable travel if not wfh.
Husband works super long hours so could maybe do something at the weekend but I don’t think we could in the week.
Am going to look at freelancing -thank you for the pointers.
Any other advice happily received !

With kids at school surely working in a school would be easily possible? Either lunchtime supervisor type role, an admin type role or you could consider would you want to be a TA although this would need training. Wrap around care isn’t that expensive usually if you did need some help.

ThatsGoingToHurt · 04/10/2022 09:23

Ideas -

Evening jobs
Weekend jobs
I know quite a few people who do one 12 hours Night Shift in a care home at the weekend.
NHS or Local authority bank work - maybe helpful if you can get ad hoc childcare.
self employment

How old are your kids? If 2/3 could you find a cheap pre-school. My DC normal nursery is £60 per day, but the local pre-school is £20 per day (but it is only 9-3 term time only, but may help you do some bank work)

ThatsGoingToHurt · 04/10/2022 09:25

Just seen your new post. I would definitely recommend NHS or local authority bank work then you can pick your shifts and just not pick shifts in the school holidays.

MissRp · 04/10/2022 09:26

Thanks - will take a look

School admin job would be ideal for you! Stiff competition though. Otherwise, TA or lunchtime supervisor jobs would work around the kids. Then there are things like temp agencies or NHS bank where you can pick/choose shifts to a certain extent. Also depending on where you are and the nature of your experience, there are some very well paid PA roles like those in banking that would more than cover wrap around care.

What you can’t do is expect to work whilst looking after young kids. You deserve to fully concentrate on work and do the best job you can without pushing your work into silly o’clock and going without sleep to manage it all. The kids deserve to be looked after properly, not dumped in front of the TV and snapped at for interrupting which is inevitably what will happen. And that’s speaking from experience, so many of us have been during the pandemic! Good luck.

pisspants · 04/10/2022 09:59

Have a look at the earn £10 a day thread I mention on here op. It has lots of ideas of side hustles and you could combine a few to bring in some extra money. Wouldn't be an issue of childcare then either.

pisspants · 04/10/2022 10:00

that is meant to say in the money thread on here not I mention!
