Why are people happy to pay thousands for 2 weeks in the sun in summer

Yet complain about paying the same (or less) to heat their homes during the coldest months.

I don't mean anyone who cannot afford either but the people who refuse to put their heating on, whose children are wearing multiple layers and coats in the house and now believe turning on the oven is akin to murder.

Because people prioritise spending money on luxuries they enjoy like holidays.

Hearing your home is a necessity, not a luxury, we shouldn't have to pay these sort of prices to heat our home to prevent death. We have been severely let down by the government

sjxoxo · 02/10/2022 21:14

I don’t get the holiday thing either 😂 I don’t really go away on beach holidays etc as I always think such a huge expense for sitting 2 weeks somewhere else! I like seeing new things but I struggle to book holidays as I just can’t justify the wasted time and wonder if I’m missing a trick!? I also don’t feel I ‘need’ a holiday. I think some people do though!! X

Cassillero · 02/10/2022 21:15

Well I've been moaning about it loads because I'm used to paying less. Although to be fair I moaned about the lower price too. I'm not going to be cold and miserable though - I'll still pay it - but I'd much prefer to spend that money on a lovely holiday.

erikbloodaxe · 02/10/2022 21:16

I agree we have been let down. Absolutely.

Necessities come before luxuries though, want and need. People are happy to pay for what they want but not for what they need.

I'd rather heat my house though.

So your question is why would someone complain about having to spend money on staying warm enough to survive in their own home when previously they might have spent that money enjoying two weeks away from home lying on a beach, drinking fancy drinks with umbrellas.

does that really need answering??

I enjoy seeing new places, visiting museums and pottering around a different place. I go for more weekend breaks than full fledged holidays though! This year, I have been to Bristol, Exeter, Oslo,as well as twice to my home country (that was for family visits). Going to Edinburgh this week and probably Dublin for Christmas as well as Germany for a family visit..

I never sit during my holidays, I am always exploring and visiting museums and browsing the shops!

Refrosty · 02/10/2022 21:23

We should be happy paying thousands to stay warm and live?

I'm happy paying thousands to go on holiday, but I'm pretty sure my elderly retired neighbours don't go anywhere and would have similar bills to pay. I'm not happy about that.

Eminybob · 02/10/2022 21:26

And also most people have already budgeted for their holidays years in advance. The energy rise is a sudden expected increase to expenditure

MsTSwift · 02/10/2022 21:27

What’s wrong with sort

erikbloodaxe · 02/10/2022 21:29

Of course we shouldn't have to pay the amounts we are doing. We also shouldn't be sitting in a cold house all winter and then spending an arm and a leg on a holiday.

This doesn't apply to elderly neighbours as I stated in my post.

Why are people happy to pay hundreds of pounds for food in a michelin restaurant once a year for a birthday or anniversary but complain about spending hundreds in Sainsbury's for their weekly shop 🙄

Forfukzsake · 02/10/2022 21:31

I'd heat my house before paying for a holiday but we all still wear layers before putting the heat on as wasting gas is bad for the future of the planet. I fully support everybody wearing multiple layers before putting the heat on, always, no matter the price of the fuel.

Is it that common to spend thousands?

I spend thousands but thats because my parents live in Asia so naturally the flights are expensive and I go once a year ( I don't really spend much when I am there as I stay with my parents) and then I have weekend breaks to European cities. we generally fly with ryanair/easyjet but lately as we have had more money, we stay at nice hotels but in the past, we used to stay at budget hotels. However as its generally for 2 nights, it doesn't add up to a great deal and I definitely don't pay for 14 cumulative nights in hotels throughout the year!

I imagine that with the cost of living crisis, people would choose holidays ike ours.

Who is doing this?

Surtsey · 02/10/2022 21:37

I wouldn't pay good money to spend two weeks lying on a beach in hot sunshine. I don't do heat very well and an inescapable fortnight of it, with all the sun cream and whatnot just doesn't appeal.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/10/2022 21:38

Holidays are a luxury, heating is a necessity. We've, very recently had a holiday abroad, but you can bet that Im moaning about the cost of energy because it doesn't need to be this way and I'm worried about the people who won't be able to afford to heat their homes.

The Govt could have made the energy companies pay, but that's not what the Tories do, is it?

Takingabreakagain · 02/10/2022 21:39

In previous years people could afford to heat their homes and go on holiday. This year people will be spending all/most of their spare money on hearing so won't be going on holiday. That's reason to be annoyed in my house

Inklingpot · 02/10/2022 21:39

‘Why do other people think differently to me?’

mioz · 02/10/2022 21:40

Who are you talking about? I love me a good ££££ holiday and yes I do think it’s a piss take how expensive it is to heat my home. I pay for holidays as they are a luxury, and to make memories with my family. Heating your house is a necessity - no one looks forward to the precious memories they make by putting the heating on so they don’t freeze to death.

7eleven · 02/10/2022 21:42

I can afford holidays and to heat my home. However, I’m still putting a gilet and thermal socks on rather than the heating because I refuse to give excessive money to the energy greedy guts.

toastedcat · 02/10/2022 21:45

I'm with you, OP. I get what you're saying.

It's absolutely shit that it's like this BUT I'm not cutting off my nose to spite my face by being freezing all winter. It's like a lot of people think that turning the heating on for ten minutes will cost 8 grand. It's obviously not cheap but if you can afford to pay thousands on a holiday you can afford to be comfortable this winter. Why would you be freezing and miserable voluntarily.

Poppitt58 · 02/10/2022 21:47

Why would you just sit? For us it’s about new people, food, swimming, snorkelling, walking, relaxing, reading, wildlife, nature, culture, if you don’t like these things then clearly beach destinations are not for you, but it’s very odd that you think the only option is to sit down!

PollyAmour · 02/10/2022 21:49

I’m looking forward to my 2 weeks holiday next summer. I’ve budgeted for it and I can afford it.

Heating my home is a different story and I’ll be scavenging for driftwood for the woodburner and wearing multiple layers of clothing, as will the rest of my family. I’m even knitting my dog a jumper.

Heyahun · 02/10/2022 21:50

Heat is a boring thing to spend money on isn’t it! 😂 I’d rather skimp on heating/bills and continues enjoying my life and having holidays tbh

FloorWipes · 02/10/2022 21:53

I am not planning to turn on the heating this year if it can be helped but I am planning a holiday because I need something to look forward to (I plan to spend about £1000). I can’t afford both so it’s a no brainer that I should wear layers yet also go on holiday. Not sure how that would be confusing!
