Tonsillectomy recovery

My 3 year old DD had her tonsils & adenoids removed as well as having grommets fitted just over a week ago. She’s actually recovering really well, eating great and coping well during the day, but night time is a different story. She wakes up screaming that her ears hurt - I understand that this is probably her throat hurting but it projects as her ears.

She’s so incredibly upset when she wakes, it takes us a while to be able to get any calpol/nurofen into her. She does settle eventually but I could have been up with her for well over an hour

anyone had any experience of this with their children? Did they also suffer longer at night?

she’s due to start back at nursery next week but honestly not sure how she’ll
cope if she still isn’t sleeping

My son had his tonsils / adenoids out but he was 5 when he had it. I dont remember him being worse at night though and he didnt take long to recover overall. I wonder if its the grommets that are causing the pain for your daughter? Did the hospital give you any info? Otherwise it might be worth contacting them or speaking to your GP?
Hope she recovers soon.

My son had his tonsils out when he was 4. No ear pain but around day 10 the scabs fall off and he was in a lot of pain and needed pain medication. He went back to nursery after 2 weeks off. Best thing we ever did.

Yes! But without grommets for us. We found nights were harder, it was just a case of persevering through unfortunately because of him getting a dry throat at night.
We found it was a 2 week recovery period (almost to the day) from surgery to 'able to cope as normal'.

If I had another offspring having a tonsillectomy I think I'd get a humidifyer. When my son had his out, it wasn't until he'd almost recovered that we figured out his pain was less in a humid environment.

My ds had his tonsils and adenoids out when he was 2. I found the only way to combat the night time was to keep him dosed on painkillers (calpol and ibuprofen) at regular intervals throughout the day so he didn't get to the point where he was bad.

A humidifier in his room and propping him up slightly to sleep also helped.

Plenty of rough foods in the daytime to help speed the healing up.
