Have you ever suffered prolonged breast pain?

I have breast pain, one side only. This has been going on for about 2yrs now. It's not one spot or lump, more like a throb that is 'cloudy'. Whatever it is, it's getting stronger and I have it every day. I've had an xray, bloods and a mamogram & all were negative. My dm had DCIS but it was only found because she had a huge reduction from JJ to D. But they said the reduction was so large, no further treatment was needed. She's been clear ever since. So I'm strongly informed I have nothing to worry about, so why does my boob hurt? Have you experienced this?

I have experienced this quite recently. I ended up getting a mammogram but only for peace of mind as I didn't have any other symptoms.

The consultant told me that most pain of my type was due to ligaments and that it was rarely a symptom of cancer. The mammogram was clear so that was the end of it.

Mastalgia?

Mintine · 03/11/2022 09:56

i have this and I’ve been suffering with it since March. Just in one breast, the right one, I get pain most of the time and sharp burning pain the nipple. I went to the GP in June and she referred me on the two week cancer pathway.
I saw a doctor at the hospital and he examined me and asked me some questions about family history, of which there is none of breast cancer. He said it was fine. I wasn’t offered a mammogram or any type of scan.
I’m still worried about it, keep meaning to go back to the GP.

Could be psychological due to your mum, and I don’t say that lightly as my DH had terrible anxiety that manifested in physical problems that were very real to him.
Have you tried a good quality evening primrose oil ? I swear by it for breast pain, but I still get some pain before periods.

5yearplan · 03/11/2022 10:05

I have had it in one place for a while. The doctor examined me and didn’t think there was anything to worry about so didn’t refer me. I have since had a mammogram which was clear. After the doctor told me it was nothing serious I stopped registering the pain so much! I was more aware of it when I was anxious about it.

I had it once, turns out it was from cycling! It was a muscle pain or something from cycling daily without a decent sports bra. It went away by itself when I remedied the sports bra situation and only came back once when I started cycling after a long break and again wasn’t wearing a decent bra. I really need better bras. Do you do any exercise without a good sports bra?

Yes, I'm pleased you've asked this op because only a few weeks ago I actually found out via the breast surgeon what the actual cause was.
I have large breasts and it turned out to be my bras that were the wrong size and style.
Basically, I had stopped wearing underwired bras and my breasts became painful, a kind of pain like you have when you press on a bruise. It would actually wake me up in the night and I would sit and massage my breasts to relieve the ache and throbbing.
It turned out that the new none wired bras I had been wearing for months weren't supportive enough due to not being the correct size and therefore not supporting enough, which in turn was causing the breast tissue to become stretched abd damaged.
The surgeon measured me and recommended the correct style of none underwired bra, which I bought.
Since wearing them all the pain and throbbing has gone.
Playtex cross your heart bra's, best ever. My granny would be proud.

I wear a crop top in bed to stop my boobs stretching down, it does help.

I had my daughter 12 months ago and breast fed for 6 week. I had mastitis and had to take antibiotics. Now 12 months on I still get pain in that breast on and off. At the time of the mastitis the doctor felt a tiny lump so I had an ultrasound and they confirmed it was a tiny cyst. I can’t feel the cyst now so not sure if it’s still there. I went to the doctors last week to ask why I’m still getting the pains as I have it on and off throughout the month. She said my breast feels normal and she can’t feel a lump she’s sent me away prescribing me to take ibuprofen 3 times a day for ten days then if I’m still feeling the pain after that she will refer me on a none emergency basis. I’ve seen some other comments on similar posts recommending evening primrose oil. I started taking that a few months ago and it stopped my periods so messed up my cycle. Don’t know what to do 🤷🏻‍♀️ The pain I get isn’t unbearable and it moves around but it is bothering me what it is.

I have it intermittently, left side only, upper outer side.

Saw the GP a while ago who thought it was muscular and would rectify itself. Couldn't feel any lumps etc.

It didn't and it seemed to be getting worse - probably a year later by then - so went back to different GP who examined and couldn't feel anything and referred me to breast clinic.

Dr there examined me and couldn't feel anything. Told me the likeliest cause of my type of pain was stress. To be fair I had been quite stressed for months. 2nd likeliest cause = caffeine. I had 6 weeks of absolutely no caffeine (decaf not even allowed) that was hard! I have now switched to decaf. 3rd likeliest cause = soy milk (which I don't drink).

It's still around but only very intermittently.
Maybe it was the stress and caffeine, who knows.
It is still a worry but 3 doctors have had a good old feel so I'm hoping they are right! Will be happy to have a mammogram next year though.

Nongatron · 22/11/2022 21:06

Yes I have had breast pain. I have had breast cancer before so I was extremely anxious. Had a mammogram which was clear and I have been examined by several Drs. No lump found . I suspect I am very aware of any sensation which feels off and so like other posters I then fixate and stress out about it. Reducing caffeine and supportive bras do help . I think breast pain is very common.

Nongatron · 22/11/2022 21:17

Sorry meant to add I’m sorry you’re experiencing is op I know how worrying it can be. Try cutting down caffeine, wearing supportive bras and I found magnesium helpful

mdh2020 · 22/11/2022 21:25

I have breast pain and I actually went to a breast clinic and was examined and had a mammogram. They could find no cause for the pain and gave me a leaflet that says it could be hormonal, menopausal or have no cause at all. Basically, undiagnosable breast pain.

Turningamumagain · 22/11/2022 21:37

It is reassuring to know we are not alone and it sounds quite common. I will comment again if I get a referral as to what they say. I do feel like my hormones are all
over since having my daughter so most likely connected to that. Do also think I’m noticing more as I’m thinking about it a lot.

PurpleFlower1983 · 22/11/2022 21:53

I have this in my left boob, I was told before that it was muscular but I feel like I should get it checked out! No lumps or anything. Seems like it’s quite common!

SilverSalver · 22/11/2022 22:01

I've had it on and off for years. Clear mammogram, referred to breast clinic 2016 all clear.
Found lump and diagnosed with breat cancer 2019. Assured that the pain was coincidence.
A year later after surgery and treatment I still had breast pain.
My surgeon scanned me for reassurance and said it's just one of those things. Even though I'm pretty flat chested I'm told to wear a supportive bra at all times and a sports bra in bed. I don’t wear a bra in bed but getting the right bra has been a game changer.

Nandocushion · 22/11/2022 22:03

My breast surgeon told me that caffeine, alcohol and salt intake can cause breast pain. She also recommended not wearing wired bras, and she said that sports bras were the most supportive. Neither she nor I are particularly large chested, so I'd combine that with the advice from a PP who said that not properly supporting large breasts could also be the issue! I definitely have much less pain now that I rarely wear wired bras.

Bubnbutton · 19/03/2024 22:43

Hey,
I know this is few years old but wondered if you got to the bottom of this? Literally in the situation now. Have been having pain since Oct 2021, got pregnant pain went and now back again! Can not feel a lump or anything, docs dismissing me as they can’t feel anything. Can I ask for a mammogram if I’m under 40? Thanks
