We're going for 3 days at half term with a 13 year old. What should we do? On the list so far is The Real Mary Kings Close, Castle and Camera Obscura. Any other must sees?

the dungeon is brill actors take you round , the museums are very good and free, a ghost walk at night yes late night for 13 year old but well worth it

If the weather is good climb Arthur's Seat, if not so good go to the roof of the Museum of Scotland to get a great view towards the castle and beyond. Holyrood House is worth a visit(topical since Queen's death) and Scottish Parliament is opposite, open to visitors including the chamber. Both have good cafes.

We did the free Harry Potter walking tour which we all enjoyed. They don't charge a set price but you tip / pay what you feel at the end. The museum of Scotland is very good.

You could spend a whole day going from the top to the bottom of the Royal Mile, starting at the castle, moving to Camera Obscura and the Scottish Storytelling Centre before moving down to the Scottish Parliament.

I agree the huge museum on Chambers St is also excellent, the art galleries on Princes Street and the Gallery of Modern Art on the outskirts of Edinburgh (with regular bus services from the centre) are also great.

You could do a day trip to South Queensferry and go on one of the boat trips to Inchcolm Island which is a beautiful place to visit.

We really enjoyed the Royal Yacht.

We loved the underground dungeons if you like spooky stuff? Also did a day trip to Loch ness and the highlands, although you do spend a lot of time on the coach.

Britannia, the royal yacht in Leith was wonderful .
If you visit the Museum of Scotland ( highly recommended ) don’t miss the Millennium Clock , it’s fascinating .
My husband enjoyed the Scotch Whisky Story ( may not be the correct name ), and I loved tracking down locations from Ian Rankin’s Rebus novels.
Feel the need to book a return visit soon !

The castle requires prebooking online. Went in the spring and missed out as we hadn't booked and it was sold out.

If you’re driving do the Kelpies on the way there or back. We went a good 40 mins out of our way on a 9hr drive and it was definitely worth it.

Train both ways so next time!
