Most meals in this house are under £5

Sticky belly pork and smoked garlic with jacket sweet potatoes and spring greens
Broccoli and sesame soup with wontons
Curried squash with caramelised red onions and coriander rice
Spaghetti carbonara with a green salad
Toad in the hole with roasted vegetables and gravy
Sweetcorn fritters with red chilli chutney and crudités
French onion soup with stale bread croutons and melted cheese
Individual bacon and mushroom pies with white sauce and steamed vegetables
Baked Camembert bread with assorted dippers (to use up everything in the fridge)
Flatbread with chicken carnitas, fresh salsa and soured cream
Homemade pizzas

CeeJay81 · 02/10/2022 15:21

Fish fingers chips and peas

Almost everything we have for tea in this house is under a fiver for a family of 4 (1 x teen and 1 preteen who is always hungry)

This week i have planned/already eaten:

Baked potatoes, tuna and salad
Cheese and onion pie
Spag bol
Black bean fajitas
Chorizo pasta
Shepherds pie
Steak, chips and veg (this is over a fiver)

We are trying to eat less meat so anything with mince in gets bulked out with lentils. I make 1kg of mince do 4 meals for the 4 of us using this method (so 16 portions)

I’d like ideas, I find the price of the weekly shop is going up all the time. Mince is good…spaghetti bol, chilli, cottage pie. Things like fish fingers or sausages are ok, but processed and I try to avoid them for more than one meal a week if I can. Maybe I should have put the word healthy in the title. Homemade soup is good. Jacket pots, omelette. Just feel we have the same thing over and over

Many pasta dishes, e.g. puttanesca (one jar anchovies, one tin toms, garlic, oil, packet spaghetti).

Many rice dishes, e.g. risotto.

I have a lot of porridge for breakfast.

whats expensive is convenience meals, e.g. sachets of flavoured porridge rather than a massive bag of porridge, or say ready prepped soup versus home made, or indeed any ready meals.

Meat too, obvs. Fruit and veg are obvs expensive too, but they are imperative for your good health. So I eat them, but I’ve given up other things. Or have the other things in moderation (crisps, chocks, etc. or that’s the idea ;-)

@Dacadactyl the cheese and onion pie sounds nice! Any specific recipe?

Jellybott · 02/10/2022 15:48

Check out cardiff.mum on Instagram, she does a series of 5 meals for £25 from Aldi and some of them look delicious

gogohmm · 02/10/2022 15:54

Serve with garlic flat bread £1

All prices are Lidl (thankfully my nearest shop)

Menstrualcycledisplayteam · 02/10/2022 16:10

They all sound amazing @HorribleHerstory! Where could I find those recipes, please?

BaronessBomburst · 02/10/2022 16:12

Roasted vegetables (peppers, carrots, broccoli and red onions), and chickpeas served with mustard mash.
Moussaka with rice. (that would have been more than £5 but there are three portions left over to do lunches in the week).

Howmanysleepsnow · 02/10/2022 16:15

www.asda.com/good-living/recipe/kale-bacon-pearl-barley-risotto
This is gorgeous, and with Asda value range prices still only about 60p a serving.

Dacadactyl · 02/10/2022 16:26

@Rubiesue i use this recipe www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/cheeseandonionpie_89625 I dont make my own pastry though because i find the ready rolled ones easier and cheaper.

LadyHelenaJustina · 02/10/2022 16:31

Chicken thighs, mashed potatoes, broccoli, carrots, sweetcorn, gravy. Less than £5 for six of us.
