Recommendations of funny, uplifting books for a 11/12 year old boy?

I feel like there's a dearth of books for this age group - too old for Tom Gates and Wimpy Kid but not quite ready for the teen book.

He's been reading things like Warrior Cats and Alex Rider, but has said he wants something funny and joyful!

Recommendations welcome, please

James Herriott?

Percy Jackson books have a more serious side, and are a proper long read, but are pretty funny.
To state the obvious, Harry Potter has a lot of humour.
There's always the dreaded David Walliams and the classic Roald Dahl if he hasn't read them.
Lemony Snickett?

He's too old for David Walliams (thank god), he's never been into Harry Potter and we've done all the Dhal. i'll askl about Lemony S. Never heard of James Herriott

He could try Holes by Louis Sachar? And the follow-up, Small Steps.

Loki by Louie Stowell also very popular - there are two so far in the series. Wonder by RJ Palacio is also a great book.

Both of my DSs have loved all of these, having started with Tom Gates/Wimpy Kid/13 Storey Treehouse series.

They also loved Percy Jackson/Alex Rider and the Young Bond series by Charlie Higson.

James Herriott (real name Alf Wright or something I think) wrote several volumes of stories about his experiences as a vet in Yorkshire decades back. They're the type of thing that can be read by adults and kids - very wholesome, funny and enjoyable! I'm getting DS10 the dog stories compilation for Christmas as he's dog crazy.

Agree with you that David Walliams is bloody awful.

Anthony Horowitz 'Diamond Brothers' series is hilarious.

The first 'Diamond Brothers' book is called The Falcons Malteser.
