How long does an open bottle of wine last

lugeforlife · 01/10/2022 19:24

I don't drink much - 1/2 drinks per week. Usually gin.

I do like red wine and I think from a health perspective maybe better to spend my alcohol points on this (yes yes I know...).

When I fancy wine I get half bottles but this is expensive. If I bought a whole one how long does it keep for? I could get a stopper!

3 days, after that it declines, still ok for cooking for a while.

PhoneyM · 01/10/2022 19:26

3 hours 3 days - get an air tight stopper .

BamBamBilla · 01/10/2022 19:28

Several weeks in this house. It's only used for cooking.

Get a vacuvin - takes the air out and seals it with special stopper, lasts as long as you like, just as if it was unopened. So worth it if you only drink a glass at a time. . Pays for itself rapidly.

forageintheforest · 01/10/2022 20:09

About half an hour here.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 01/10/2022 20:14

3 days maximum if sealed. But I’d say it noticeably declines from 24 hours onwards.

Wibble128 · 01/10/2022 20:15

One meal

Sunnysal · 01/10/2022 20:16

Sometimes an hour.

changedusername190 · 01/10/2022 20:17

If I'm not going to drink it I freeze it in ice cube trays and use it in cooking

TiredButAlive · 01/10/2022 20:19

With a good quality wine you wouldn't want to drink it more than 24-36 hours after opening. It definitely degrades. If you just fancy something cheap and cheerful why not check out some of the wine boxes? They last for weeks.

PortalooSunset · 01/10/2022 20:21

3 days.

Jules912 · 01/10/2022 20:29

I find up to a week is fine with a decent wine stopper (one of those vacuum ones).

mrsm43s · 01/10/2022 20:32

I've always drunk it up to a week. TBH, with red, I tend to find it least nice freshly opened, and best after a day or two. After a week it gets relegated to cooking wine, which has no expiry in my house (and is a mix of various dregs!)

enjoyingscience · 01/10/2022 20:32

This is why I’ve switched to boxes of wine - I’m the only one in my house that drinks and was throwing away at least a third of every bottle I opened.

there’s some decent boxes out there, and it is so much less wasteful.

keeprunningupthathill · 01/10/2022 20:32

About an hour 😳

Castaspell · 01/10/2022 20:34

Definitely look into a box! We only ever drink it within 48hrs after that any leftovers are frozen for cooking.

SudocremOnEverything · 01/10/2022 20:34

you can freeze wine. I don’t know what it’s like defrosted, but I assume it’s drinkable.

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/10/2022 20:35

On average an hour in our house 🤷🏻‍♀️

In seriousness though, it'll still be fine after 3 days or so.

HammerMyhome · 01/10/2022 20:36

It’s fine for days but get a box

HammerMyhome · 01/10/2022 20:36

Defrosted wine tastes exactly the same. Done it!

rainyskylight · 01/10/2022 20:43

Another vote for the vacuum pump stopper. I love a nice glass but can only handle one, without the stopper it wouldn’t be worth opening a bottle.

I also freeze left over wine for cooking with (when its only just ok to drink but I don’t want anymore).

Bramshott · 01/10/2022 20:44

Another vote for wine boxes - they're great!
