I've been asked to give this as a gift, but my reading habits took a really weird (and completely unmonitored) turn at this age and absolutely wouldn't be appropriate!

Hoping someone can suggest something that resonated and is appropriate. My kids are too little for me to be in this headspace!

@TheRubyRedshoes not going to give that away in case someone who hasn't read it decides to give it a try on the back of this thread 😃. As a teenager I was amazed by the twist and thought it was such a clever grown up book but maybe if I read it again now I'd think "wtf" 😂.

TheRubyRedshoes · 02/10/2022 19:37

Could you pm me the twist

Stephen King

Me too!! I was only allowed 3 books to take away on holiday, so before my summer holidays, I went to the library and picked the 3 biggest books I could find, no caring about title, author, and one of these was a Stephen King. I became hooked at the age of 13 and I am currently reading his last, Fairy Tales.

I read anything I could get my hands on. I loved Rebecca and pride and prejudice. My friend read a sequel to Pride and Prejudice around that time. I remember her rage at what had been done to her favourite characters.

I remember the flowers in the attic books doing the rounds with my friends and we also discovered choose your own adventure books. I read lots of Judy Blume Tiger Eyes being a favourite. I reread that one not that long ago and still enjoyed it. My brother gave me On fortunes wheel by Cynthia Voight which I loved and still have. He also gave me rats of Nimh. I was also reading in secret a very erotic book that I found in my DSis stuff. Which blew my mind.

Oh my this takes me back!

Pretty sure I was well into Jackie Collins by 14. I do remember pinching Valley of the Dolls from a friend's Mum's bookshelf and having my teenage mind blown.

I was well over Sweet Valley High by 14 (although I recollected them as an adult, have the first 100 books proudly displayed!)

One I haven't seen mentioned is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. That's timeless and pretty sure it was a school-required novel around that age.

Am itching to get my hands on a copy of Forever Amber, I missed that and it sounds utterly fanatastic!

Like you, OP, I wasn't reading stuff other 14yo girls might be reading. Grin

Bit of difference to the stuff we had to read for school (Lord of the Flies, Wuthering Heights etc.)

At that age I read all of Gerald Durrell's books. Also Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy.
