Is my son's nose broken?

In Rugby tonight, he got kicked in the face and a nose stud caught the side of his nose. Lots of blood and his nose is blocked. It is definitely wonky but it might be swelling? Should I take him to a and e? He is 13.

Is my son's nose broken?

I'd put some ice on it and call 111 to see what they suggest.

Cakeonthefloor · 30/09/2022 22:05

He has had ice on it. I will ring them tomorrow. He never makes a fuss and is obviously in pain.

If he is in a lot of pain or the swelling is getting worse I would take him to A&E.

No one here can tell you whether his nose is broken.

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 30/09/2022 23:04

I have no idea if its broken but I'd take him in if there's the possibility. He may need assessment for concussion too.

TrashyPanda · 30/09/2022 23:05

what did the coach say?

at 13 id expect them to recommend a trip to hospital to get it checked out properly

i was attacked and had my nose broken - and it was really, really painful, so all sympathies to him

AdelaideRo · 30/09/2022 23:07

Not done ED for years but the guidance used to be to wait for swelling to go down and if still wonky to come back for ENT to sort it out.

mindutopia · 30/09/2022 23:26

There isn’t much that can be done for a broken nose (I’ve broken mine twice). I would ice it and see how it is tomorrow/Sunday and then call 111 for OOH rather than A&E as you’ll be waiting forever.

Of course, I suppose what I was asking is, does this nose look wonky? Is it likely to be swelling or does it need treatment?

He didn't mention he was hurt. He just used tissues to clean blood up. When we picked him up, he explained to us what happened.

111 says to go to A and E if the nose has changed shape. I think it is just swelling on one side. No head, neck pain. No concussion or black eyes.

That nose looks wonky to me but I don't know what it usually looks like! Take him to A&E.

Thanks, I will go with this advice. Definitely not any worse this morning and he seems in less pain. Although, since becoming a teenager he has the communication skills of a tadpole.

It wasn't wonky before but I think there is swelling on one side, rather than the bridge being bent. I don't think a and e do much, unless it is very severe or breathing is an issue.

Jesus Christ- how do you know he doesn’t have concussion?
Take him to A&E

He is eating, drinking and behaving completely normally. It will be a long bus ride to A & E and several hours wait. If it is not necessary and they can not do anything, I would rather not waste their time.

Call 111 or go to a minor injuries unit if there’s one nearby. Concussion would be the main concern. I did the same* when I was a kid, my bridge looked a bit wonky & by the next day I had 2 black eyes, looked like a panda & it was very swollen. X-ray showed a fracture at the bridge, but they were more concerned about about concussion. Now I have a bit of a wiggle & bump near my bridge & a good anecdote.

*it was the end of term at my first year in secondary school & my friend was doing an impression of an incident that had happened that year, I got caught in the flailing (like Bart & Lisa walking towards each other windmilling their arms). Properly saw stars lol! Luckily the home ec rooms were defrosting their freezers so it was quickly iced with a fast defrosting packet of peas & a lamb chop in a freezer bag! The 80s ladies & gentlemen lol.

He was injured yesterday evening and it is not worse this morning thankfully. The stud of the boot hit the side of his nose. I am sure he is not concussed. The NHS guidelines are that a broken nose doesn't need treatment unless it is misshapen. This can't be done until the swelling has gone down but needs done within 2 weeks. I will wait for a couple of days and see if it still looks wonky. No bleeding for 12 hours.

inheritanceshiteagain · 01/10/2022 10:14

Put ice on it but if it's still wonky once the swelling have gone down he may need it reconstructing because it can affect breathing. They don't do anything immediately but wait for the swelling to go down

ColadhSamh · 01/10/2022 10:17

Was he playing with a nose stud in? Surely health and safety advice is that all such items should be removed when playing contact sport. Hope he is ok

No, he didn't have a nose stud in. The stud was from the other players shoe.

Can he breathe through it normally? Doesn't feel unusual to him?

The nostril that was hit has a big clot of dried blood in it but he can breathe through the other side. He says it hurts but he doesn't want to go to minor injuries. I think he is worried they will say not to play sport for 6 weeks.

They can say that but it's just advice, it isn't the law.

And presumably he would play for the next 6 weeks if he doesn't go, so he may as well go.
