Very worried. Repeat UTI in DH....peeing blood

DH has had 5 UTIs so far this year. They start with a headache, followed by shivering/nausea and then a day or two later with blood (with clots) in the urine.
After 3 UTIs earlier this year, he was sent for an urgent referral to a urologist where he had the works done....CT scan, ultrasound (on bladder, prostate, kidneys), prostate cancer antigen test, camera up the willy into the bladder. All came back clear/normal. Antibiotics seem to clear the infection.
After nothing over the summer he has now had another one. Dr has just prescribed antibiotics with no further suggested action?

DH has been washing his knob everynight to keep clean😏

HELP? Any drs or anyone with experience of this?

It's very worrying.....

I don't have any experience of this in men but I had a huge kidney stone that was missed when small and got big and resulted in 8years worth of pretty permanent bacterial growth and passing blood. The tests he has had really should pick stones up. The only this I have to have which you didn't mention, is I have to have X-RAYs whilst lying on my side as well as my back as they can't always see clearly (although I do have a horsehoe kidney).
I am sorry, as I don't think it's a suggestion that's going to be much help but i didn't want to just click by and thought it might be something you could ask about. I hope you do get to the bottom of it soon. It is so frustrating and the blood loss is very tiring.

Thanks for replying. He's not had an x-ray but surely the ultrasound and CT would pick up kidney stones?

Has he had an intravenous pyelogram? That’s often helpful in cases like this.

Could be a hidden stone, but it’s unlikely that could have got past a CT scan.
I assume there’s no chance of any STI?
Has he been tested for diabetes?

Recurrent UTI in older males can be a problem. Sometimes low level prophylactic antibiotics can be prescribed (Nitrofurantoin for example) to be taken long term.
I would firstly suggest trying a (very natural) supplement called D-Mannose which can be really helpful at preventing uti that are caused by E-Coli bacteria. It’s worth a try. I would definitely urge your DH to go back to doctor as passing clots suggests serious infection.

This happened to my DH years ago. Repeated UTI's (always on a friggin weekend) until eventually the diagnosed kidney stone. Said it to awkward to blast out and he passed it himself.

Hopefully they will sort him out soon x

I had a stag horn kidney stone that was missed, it was huge!
An IVP would be the best course of action and I am another D-mannose fan, I take 1 daily and first sign of infection triple the dose.

Not wishing to scare you, but my DH started passing blood in early 2021. He had several courses of antibiotics, then they thought it was prostate related. In November he had an appointment for a cystoscopy, but his urine was such a dark red they couldn't see anything. They admitted him and flushed his bladder with several litres of saline, then discovered a bladder tumour; which they excised 4 days later. Unfortunately it metastatised, and he had a major stroke in January of this year, from which he didn't survive.
He did have other health problems, so I don't entirely blame them; but I wish we'd pushed harder and earlier.

@sueelleker so sorry to hear that. He had a cystoscopy. The bladder was clear.

CT scan found nothing. Prostate normal size for his age.

It's odd.

Is he drinking plenty of fluids? My dh once ended up in hospital with similar (UTI treated with IV ABs) and once in A&E with something else caused by the same - not drinking enough. He doesn’t have a ‘thirst’ thing - I’d been telling him for years that he didn’t drink enough but it was only after the medics told him that he took any notice.
