Looking for podcast/audiobook recommendations to help with bad/anxious mood

I’m feeling a bit low/lonely/anxious at the moment and am looking for audiobooks (I have audible) or podcasts to take my mind off things.

I don’t actually mean I’m searching for self-help content😁 (though I also welcome those!), I’m just giving a context to my request.

I love crime and mystery podcasts (S-Town, Serial, Teacher’s Pet etc) but have REALLY struggled to find a good new one (and I’ve tried!).

For books I like an easy listen, nothing too highbrow when I’m listening. Just something intriguing to take my mind off things. I recently relistened to some Nicci French and quite enjoyed that.

Nothing seems to capture my interest lately (maybe because of the low mood)☹️ Any suggestions would be very much appreciated😊

My absolute favourite podcast is Parenting Hell, it has me in stitches!

Jim Harold's Campfire
Sasquatch Chronicles

Ecapism, both keeping me sane at the moment.

The Lady Vanishes is good. It's a bit slow at first because you are thinking 'how can this be interesting' but it's fantastic.

GoTheFcukToSleep · 01/10/2022 17:57

Thanks so much for replying.
@AllThatHoopla i’ve started on The Lady Vanishes today and it’s so good! Just what I needed.

Normal Gossip
Fortunately
And Parenting Hell!

Death in Ice Valley on BBC sounds for a good true crime investigation.

Solosunrise · 01/10/2022 18:14

Might be my age but i find desert island discs very soothing.

Also Betwixt the Sheets is good.

AllThatHoopla · 01/10/2022 18:16

@GoTheFcukToSleep Yes, it's really good.

I can't get out the car some days and I've audibly gasped a few times too.

theseriousmoonlight · 01/10/2022 18:18

Have you read the Rivers of London books? The narrator has the most soothing voice, the plots are intricate but not overly so and the writing is quite witty. I've just binged all of them in a few weeks.

Chasingthefrog · 01/10/2022 19:17

Have you listened to The Potato Factory by Bryce Courtenay on Audible? The narrator is incredible and brings the story (it's based on the life story of the 'real' Fagin, not about a potato factory at all 🤔😁) alive.
I listened to it years ago and still think about it now. It's also also massive - over 23 hours long so you really feel like you know the characters by the end.

FoldedTowels · 01/10/2022 19:22

Selfie - How the world became self obsessed by Will Stoor

The Self Delusion - Tom Oliver

FoldedTowels · 01/10/2022 19:24

Actually scrap that - not sure if they might have the opposite effect sorry. Was trying to take you’re mind off you 😢

xxcatcatcatxx · 01/10/2022 19:26

Love listening to a long rambly ASMR video on YouTube 🥰 xxx

MonkeyPuddle · 01/10/2022 19:28

I’m listening to ‘village green for lonely hearts’ ok audible, it’s one of the ones which is included so you don’t have to use a credit on it. It’s just pure easy listening, predictable rom com. I’ve got lots going on in life and my head is just too busy, so it’s nice that I can put it on and not have to think but still have my attention held.

dumbstruckdumptruck · 01/10/2022 19:30

It's total lowbrow silliness, but Shagged Married Annoyed with Chris and Rosie Ramsey is FAB for taking my mind off things and having a giggle

Wishihadanalgorithm · 01/10/2022 19:31

Alan Cart’s Life’s a Beach is just hilarious. Cannot recommend enough.

GoTheFcukToSleep · 01/10/2022 19:31

Oh wow more! Thanks so much! I am taking note! And @MonkeyPuddle yes it’s exactly that, having my attention focussed on something, which is soothing.
thanks all

Try All Killa No Filla - true crime and the two women who do it are comedians. I should add they are v funny but never about the victims or the case; the Filla is just random funny stuff.
