Looking for a book

I am looking for a book I read in ireland in the 1980's where I lived then.

Information I have is that I can remember it had a yellowish backcover and spine with a misty grey cover. The author was a woman

I vaguely remember it being set in Norfolk and featured witchcraft and poppets or corn dolls,

I read my copy to tatters and would like another on Kindle or Paper- but have not been able to find it.

I think I bought it in Easons as far as I can recall.

Something by Penelope Lively? She wrote fairly spooky books for kids.

Could it be Norah Lofts aka Peter Curtis, The Witches aka The Little Wax Doll aka Catch As Catch Can aka The Devil’s Own?

Among the many covers it had there was one like that.

Thank you for replying Smile

Both Authors ring a bell; so now I have somewhere to start my research from.

Adult or children's /Young Adult book?

Dalekjastninerels · 10/10/2022 11:26

Children to Young Adult; I would say child 10 upwards.

Was going to suggest the Merrily Watkins books but they are not set in Norfolk.

Dalekjastninerels · 10/10/2022 11:39

Thanks Clawdy; worth a look anyway.

It is driving me nuts- I can vaguely picture the cover although the colours black grey and yellow are clear to me; but title and author are blank.

Probably not a match but The Corn Dolly by Margaret Elliot is what Google threw up when I had a quick search.

I sympathise with the book search OP, I have been trying to locate one from childhood for so long that I do genuinely often wonder if I've made up the images I had of it in my mind or conflated books together as I've never found it. It feels so vivid in my mind when I think of it too.

This is a close as could be and may possibly be the book I remember.Flowers

If and when I find it I will definetly post :) (while drinking champagne)

The Merrily Watkins books are a bit too recent for the OP to have read them in the 80s. (And they’re set in Shropshire rather than Norfolk.)
