Please recommend me some harmless movies. Things have been pretty rough recently so I’m looking for pure escapism. Naff romcoms welcome. Anything with little to no trauma, swearing, violence etc.

I’ve recently watched Perfect Pairing and Look Both Ways on Netflix and loved them both. Can anyone recommend anything similar please?

Virgin River on Netflix. Bonus points for being Autumny. Hope things improve for you soon Op.

The Scapegoat, based on a Daphne du Maurier novel is an engaging romp!
A little darker but Justified about a very easy on the eye sherif is excellent.

Etinoxaurus · 30/09/2022 11:21

And a documentary- searching for sugar man. Don’t Google it, there’s a mention of a suicide, but the whole narrative ark is wonderful.

The Holidate? And not a movie - but Emily in Paris is my go to feel-good nonsense watch

Whatapalavarrr · 30/09/2022 11:22

Anything on the Great Christmas channel 🎄

NotAnotherTaco · 30/09/2022 11:33

If you don't mind a series, I've just started Chesapeake Shores on Netflix and it's utter (watchable) trash 😂
Very Hallmark Christmas film vibes and easy to watch.

FatherDougalsBlueJumper · 30/09/2022 11:34

Downton Abbey. Aside from just a couple of moments over seven seasons it is gentle escapism. Worst swear word uttered is "bastard"

Wanda616 · 30/09/2022 11:35

Just Like Heaven on Netflix, or the old BBC Pride and Prejudice. Its like a soft warm blanket.

FatherDougalsBlueJumper · 30/09/2022 11:35

Ahh sorry, I missed the bit about wanting movies. Although, there are two Downton Abbey movies.

Midnights · 30/09/2022 11:47

Can you access the hallmark channel? They've currently got an autumn selection going - imagine every cheesy predictable plot twist in each movie, it's divine.

The Wedding Date a movie on Netflix. Made in 2005 starring Debra Messing. Very light and fun romantic comedy.

For something more recent there's a TV series I really enjoyed that was funny and fresh " Never Have I Ever " on Netflix.

Jane the virgin is great such easy watchjng.. I've seen it twice and love it!

Ariela · 30/09/2022 12:32

Shakespeare and Hathaway. Amusing gentle detective series. Does generally involve a death but quite harmless fun.

strawberry2017 · 30/09/2022 12:32

Chesapeake shores

Angelofthenortheast · 30/09/2022 12:38

Manifest the US series is showing on UK TV now on Pick TV.

A plane lands at its destination airport for the passengers to discover that they've gone through a time loop and 5 years has past. Their kids are now 5 years older. Their spouses have remarried. Their jobs have been replaced. And they all now have psychic abilities to predict the future.

It's SOOOO CHEESY. but nicely mind numbing!

HoppingPavlova · 30/09/2022 12:41

Not a movie, but the Netflix series Virgin River would fit the bill.

MissDollyMix · 30/09/2022 12:44

It’s a series but I recommended Love Life on BBC iPlayer to my friend when she was going through her divorce and she loved it.

I came on to say anything Hallmark Christmas movie related 😄

Series wise you can't go wrong with Community, Superstore and Brooklyn 99. Failing all that, Nailed It baking show with Nicole Byers 😁

Huntswomanonthemove · 30/09/2022 12:50

The Good Wife. We’re on season four, three more seasons to go. It’s very watchable.

theydontspeakforus · 30/09/2022 13:05

Parks and Rec. My always go to when things ate bleak. Like comfort food.

MoMuntervary · 30/09/2022 13:18

Dumplin' on Netflix

LoobyDop · 30/09/2022 13:34

Wine Country on Netflix. Amy Poehler (playing basically the same character as Lesley Knope in Parks and Rec) organises a weekend away for a group of middle aged women. Absolutely hilarious.

Loved that :)

I’ve just enjoyed ‘Everything I Know About Love’ on iplayer which is in a similar vein.

‘About Time’ is my go-to weepy, easy and totally lovely film.

MastieMum · 30/09/2022 14:50

I second the Wedding Date - it's my go to Rom Com. Also Down With Love - Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellwegger doing a Rock Hudson & Doris Day pastiche. Great outfits.
