Car boot sale

Sorry this is boring but please help!

I am doing a car boot sale for the first time ever on Sunday.
I've only ever been to one once. Lots of stuff to get rid of: clothes, shoes, kitchen stuff etc. Desperately need the money...

Any tips much appreciated, I'm nervous!

Oooh I love doing a car-boot sale, we tend to do one every 3-4 years but we’d accumulated so much stuff we ended up doing 2 Sundays in a row. I found this year that people really do want something for nothing though, DH and I always have a bicker as he tends to hold out for a certain price or wants people to barter, which not many people did - they just walked off, whereas I just want to get rid of stuff and work on the basis that selling cheaper but more stuff I end up with more money than he does, of course it all gets pooled together at the end. It’s a great way to have a clear out and make some money.

Be prepared for the unloading! I haven't done one for years but I was pounced upon the second I pulled up. It was quite a challenge to get set up! Make sure everything is organised in your car so that it is easy to unload and set up when you get to the location and make sure everything is priced before you get there.

When loading your car I found it best to put everything you can in cardboard boxes, then place your table on top. When you get there take table out first then all boxes - don't empty them one at a time, get them all out where you can see them. A lot of stuff goes 'walkabout' if you're not careful.
Take plenty of change and a thermos flask - esp if you're on your own - no chance to slope off and grab a cup.
I used to price everything but don't bother now. If people want it they will ask. Not pricing means you can reduce towards end of day without having to relabel everything.
Be realistic re pricing, but don't be bullied.
First 20 minutes is frantic, after that it is much more enjoyable.

I agree with the 'pouncing on' to the extent I used to park up get table out and piss off for a coffee before unloading boxes 😁

Don't leave the car door open all day, especially if this puts a light on in the car. You'll end up with a flat battery.

Georgeskitchen · 29/09/2022 21:27

You will probably find that as yoir unpacking you will get dealers and speculators sniffing round, tell them politely to come back when you are all set up. The secret is not to ask to much but don't let things go for next to nothing. Carboots are heavily populated by CFs who try and get stuff for virtually nothing. Good luck!!

HollyJollyXmas57 · 29/09/2022 21:31

Have prices displayed if possible.

ConkerBonkers · 29/09/2022 21:32

My advice would be take plenty of change, price things to sell, and if you have a picnic rug you can put stuff on that as well as on tables, it maximises your floor space. Children's toys and books are always the best sellers imo. Get there really early, as soon as it opens is best. Enjoy! Quite a fun way to declutter, make some money, and recycle

LimboLass · 29/09/2022 21:33

As soon as you pull up. Get out lock your car and walk off. Then come back 15 minutes later to unload everything.

Otherwise you get swarmed on by bloody vultures.

Take a packed lunch!

I bet the most profitable ‘car boot’ is the burger van!

user30 · 29/09/2022 21:58

All AMAZING advice, thanks so much

I am quite concerned that I am totally unprepared and very busy every minute until Sunday but I remain optimistic!
Packed lunch is a brilliant call!

Double check the weather for the weekend, if it’s rainy the day before it may not be worth it as people will make other plans. No need to price things, but be reasonable with what you can expect to get. Nothing worse at a car boot than a seller insisting ‘I can get more on eBay’. Put it on eBay then! I see car boots as a quick easy way to have a clear out, the money is a bonus. You price low, it’s an easy hundred quid or so. Too high and you’ll be bringing a car full home. Second the advise to keep the doors shut to prevent a flat battery, we found this out the hard way!

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 29/09/2022 22:11

If you’re taking clothes and a hanging rail put the clothes on hangers and lay them on top of everything but the clothes rack. Shut your car up while you put the hanging rail together.
Take someone with you if possible so there’s someone mi ding the stall if you need the loo.

It was great - we made £210 once the pitch was paid for!

Fab op, we done last weekend and made £190, we did 3 in total this year and made £500 combined so worth doing. My loft is very thankful!

badbaduncle · 02/10/2022 19:43

I am doing another before xmas - it was lovely to see people buy my junk and really be pleased. There were some asylum seekers that bought a lot of basics - towels, bedding etc and we gave them a huge amount extra - much better than a charity shop. I am glad you had a good day too @MegaClutterSlut
