Amazing service from GP

Wow... just to balance things out because they've had a lot of complaints here there and everywhere.

DD (16) had a bad ear infection which got really nasty on Tuesday afternoon . Pharmacist told us to go to GP so at 5pm we walked in and asked if there was any chance of an appointment next day. Receptionist could tell DD in pain and said she'd slot her in for an emergency phone appointment in the next half hour... GP phoned and after phone consultation asked her to pop back to the surgery (we only live a few minutes walk from it) and she'd get the duty GP to squeeze her in just to double check her diagnosis (look in ears etc.)

6.30pm we picked up a prescription from the chemist.

Since and during lockdown our GPs have been quite hard to deal with but this was brilliant - receptionist was lovely, both GPs really helpful and friendly and pharmacist quick to help.

Hoping this means they're back on track and the mess caused by covid has calmed down.

Just wanted to give some good feed back.

Mine is also blooming brilliant and worth his weight in gold, as are his assistants with his admin.

He just ‘gets’ me and regardless as to what I say, knows by my voice on the phone or my facial gesture if I’m being stoic (as he tells me) or guarded emotionally.

He’s very professional and is an incredible role model as far as someone in the healthcare service goes. Makes me feel like an individual and not a statistic. I hope the NHS isn’t breaking him.

My GP surgery has always been fantastic, before during and after Covid

the bad press they get is not the norm, IMO

babysharksb1tch · 29/09/2022 20:58

👏 my GP practice is also absolutely outstanding and I'm lucky to be a patient there. I keep meaning to send an email to say a big thanks and well done for being super but life always gets in the way.

That’s great, but it won’t be universal as the problems are not just the result of Covid. GP service is underfunded and haemorrhaging experienced staff.

Ours is amazing too! You can ring and a Dr will call you usually within a couple of hrs. Then you go in same day if needed.
Dh is with a different practice, a really big one, and it takes at least 20 mins to even get through on the phone. Then there are no appointments for ages.

eyeteevee · 29/09/2022 21:03

We would get sent home to phone for an appointment because they won't discuss those at the desk. Aside from that we would have a similar experience. Sadly if you want a normal routine appointment it's phone roulette at 8am and if you want a face to face you are really out of luck. Emergency, needs to be seen now stuff though - they are excellent.

My Dad's GP surgery is usually very challenging to deal with, but I will say that since he was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of this month, one of the GP's has been outstanding. They've patiently gone through so many questions on the phone with me, and seems to ring once a week just to see how things are going.

He's a very welcome ray of light in a dark fucking sky right now.

My gp Is like this! I get a call same day without fail. Once it got to 7 30pm it wasnt an emergency so assumed she'd call the following day. Nope 8. 45pm she rang. Really apologetic she forgot to call!
She always avoids calling school run times as she knew id be driving.

Even when have a call for 1 of the dcs especially youngest. She always asks how i am with a condition i have.

My old gp was useles so moved surgery 5 years ago
And its be best thing. Even if a different gp calls, she will always call to check all ok when shes back to work.
. She fights for everything my youngest needs with hospital stuff.

How is it amazing? Im not seeing it. You informed the surgery that your child had ear pain and they slot you in for a telephone appointment! ( what use is that for ear pain). You then get called back in to see the GP and it was ok for you as you live a few minutes away and are able to travel back there with no problems. What if you were disabled, elderly or lived a bus ride away. I think we all need to pause and consider that we are now just grateful for the few crumbs we get thrown. It's scary how things are slipping.

Lapland123 · 30/09/2022 07:17

My GP practice is also amazing. I know it’s a staffing number crisis, and we are lucky that hasn’t hit our surgery.
Shame the newspapers continue to bash GPs and complain they work ‘part time’ at 40 hours a week. It’s often thinly veiled woman- bashing when they bring out this line too. A full time GP would be doing 60-70 hours per week, how many people want to work 1.5-2 normal full time jobs? Yup, no one.

Gumbo · 30/09/2022 07:22

I recently had exceptional service from my GP and I wrote a letter to the practice lead about it, as I figured they get numerous complaints daily but probably seldom hear about the really good side of things. They were very grateful for the letter!

It might be worth you doing something similar, it must boost the morale of the doctors (and hopefully make them do this more often)...
