Tax code for new job

Jadacakes23 · 29/09/2022 11:43

Can anyone help please,
i started a new job and was put on a tax code of 0TMTH1.
I work 20 hours and earn 790 a month.
they have taken a large chunk of my wage and now I’m in severe financial difficulty.
what caused it and what do I do about it please? Will I be refunded soon or will I have to wait for the new tax year?
I’m scared about how I will feed my children or pay my bills now, no one will help or advise me, thanks

Have you provided a P45 to your new employer? If not, this is usually the best starting point.

If not, ring the tax office (employer cannot do this for you) and they will issue you a a new tax code that will usually correct your pay on the next pay run if it's incorrect.

Looks like you have been put on a month 1 code, so it assumes you earn this much every month and adjusts the tax accordingly, but £790 a month I'm surprised they have taken anything as it would be under the tax threshold for the year...

Give them a call, it will get sorted but generally on the next pay period.

Did you manage to get sorted?

If you did not have a P45 to provide your employer should have asked to fill in a P60 form instead to avoid this issue.

I would ring your tax office and push for your employer to refund you ASAP.

Frankly your HR/payroll sound really incompetent.

Ring the tax office.
I got all my deductions back in the pay packet after they had sorted it all out.

Firstly it’s a P46 and not a P60 but it’s been replaced for a long while now with the below form, fill this out and give to your payroll/HR....

The tax deducted is not decided by payroll/HR.

OP did you submit your P45 prior to their payroll cut off date or submit the starter checklist? Remember that even if you get paid say the 25th of the month, the payroll cut off could be a lot earlier in the month.

Your payroll/HR don’t sound incompetent but between you both the P45 or starter checklist needs to be submitted in time.
