Any reason I can’t give 6 year old with CMPA hypoallergenic baby formula?

Our Lo has had Cmpa since birth, was on nutramigen as a baby and is now an oatly drinker. The thing is…. His growth has always been slow and now he’s underweight despite having a fairly good diet. All the kids in school get their glass of milk a day and I just don’t think Oatly cuts it nutrition wise. There is now a much larger selection of hypoallergenic milk available for babies, but not older children, and I wonder if it would be more nutritious for him to drink this? Or even use it in cooking? Is that a big no no or just plain weird? He has a referral back to a dietician but it’s months away and I was wondering what others thought?

I think they taste pretty rank, that would be my main concern. You could put him off it entirely. Would he drink a dairy free smoothie/meal replacement type drink? Something like Huel, which is vegan, so I would assume suitable for CMPA.

And can you add extra things to his meals? Things like dairy free 'butter', nut butters, coconut oil, coconut cream, etc?

My first thought was that they taste awful as well. The Oatly barrista is high calorie isn’t it?

I believe the main issue would be that it's lower calorie. I've only done a very cursory look but baby formula seems to be about 80cal per 100ml and Oatly barista is about 120 cals per 100ml.

If the goal is to get calories in then you would struggle.

I agree, nutramigen especially tastes absolutely disgusting! Definitely some sort of meal replacement would be a better solution.

Thanks everyone, it was the SMA hypoallergenic one that made me think of it. Not sure if this one is also rank but quite probably! Oatly barista is calorific but lacks some of the nutrients of formula/milk. I think I will stick with the oatly and give him a vitamin!

Also- I didn’t realise that there are vegan meal replacement shakes for bulking up, I’m sure a lot are not suitable for children but will def look into it. Thanks

Actually… huel is suitable for children, thanks so much for the recommendation. Gonna try it 💪

Have you looked at the growing up mills. They are fortified

Littlemissprosecco · 29/09/2022 14:47

Can you use goats milk?

Alpro do oat and soya growing up milks, they're in the uht milk section usually. Our toddler has had the soya one with a giraffe on it from about 18 months. It tastes lovely, like vanilla custard :)
