Loft insulation - which??

We need to get our loft insulated. Company came round the other day and recommended a breathable open cell spray foam insulation that goes between the rafters on the roof. Does anyone have this? Is it better than the standard fibreglass??

Any recommendations would be great. Thanks.

I had a salesperson try to persuade me to have this in my last house. I wasn’t sure so I got opinions from a few builders who all said it prevented the lift from “breathing” and I’d get condensation.
I did see a local bungalow ( after I moved) being renovated and the guys had to chip all the stuff off. They were doing it for a long time.

Wasn’t there someone on here the other week saying that some banks refuse to give a mortgage on homes with spray foam insulation?

Freddiefox · 28/09/2022 20:58

Don’t get foam…
search for a thread about mortgages and foam spraying.

I came on to say the same thing about the mortgage thing - only knew about it from reading here.

If you get the roll, you could do it yourself. Me and OH did ours and it was really easy.

Thanks! Just checked out that thread. This foam is an open cell one suitable for wood as it's breathable... apparently. Icynene.

We used rock wool which is 4-5 inches thick and has sound proofing qualities and im happy we stuck in the loft floor and the loft roofing

We had the foam on our roof, put on by previous owners. We had a leak in the roof. The whole roof had to be redone as it couldn't be repaired. If you try to take one tile off it is stuck to the tile above it and then cracks that one, it's like a very bad domino effect. Multiple roofing people confirmed this, including friend of friend who was too busy to do the work. It's also apparently a nightmare to get the tiles off. It was not a fun way to spend £8k....

I would definitely not recommend this - we moved into our house 20 years ago and this was in there. The roof is of an age now where it needs replacing and it’s going to be a nightmare. We are having a job to find a) a roofer who wants the job and b) one that isn’t going to charge an arm and a leg. There will be no tiles that we will be able to re-use (sell on) and because it’s all covered in foam no idea what state the timbers are in and if they will need replacing too. We would like to move next year but roof in its current state is probably un-mortgageable (it is a good insulator though!)

Just buy a roll of insulation from Homebase or b&q and roll it out on the floor..That's enough.
