What do you sing to your DC?

FTM and other than gin fuelled karaoke, I'm not really a singer or musically inclined. I think it's important for LO's and I want to make an effort to improve, but pathetically just realised I don't even know the second verse of old McDonald.

What songs or rhymes did your DCs love? Or any tips for the musically challenged. I'm out of my depth!

My mum always sang the train whistle blowing song (not it’s real name!) to me and I sing it to DD.
we also had a set of words we would sing to the tune of kumbaya about how much we love her.
dd is 9 now, she still likes me to sing big isn’t very keen on our Christmas choral repertoire - she’s much more a musical theatre fan!!

Train Whistle Blowing
and
Puff the Magic Dragon - both New Seekers

but I'm probably as old or older than most of your mums

The "Train Whistle Blowing" song is called "Morningtown Ride".

OP have a look for Milkshake Music Box on Channel 5 player. It has great versions of all the classic nursery rhymes, each sung in a few different ways by Derek and Jen. DS and I used to watch them over and over. He claimed his favourite song was the Grand Old Duke of York for years.

Skidamarink is a favourite of mine, it's on Cocomelon all the time.

Doe a Deer from the Sound of Music is a classic starter song.

Sweet Baby James to go to sleep. Good Mornin' from Singin' in the Rain to wake up.

DS loves Leaning on a Lampost by George Formby.

My Grandmother sang Puff The Magic Dragon to my DCs (or she did, until Alzheimer’s). I can’t hear it now without getting upset.

My Dad used to sing Al Wilson’s The Snake to me, whilst playing his guitar Grin I sang/still sing it to my DCs.

I can’t sing for shit but I do it often and loudly.

Mine got Morningtown Ride a lot, I had a primary school teacher who used to sing it to us with her guitar, in my head she was like Phoebe from Friends😁

They also got quite a lot of Total Eclipse of the Heart, the Tide is High, and Eternal Flame which I can only blame on karaoke...and a funny old-timey song about a healthy, grown up busy buzzy bee which I have no idea where it's from but is an absolute choon

Singin' in the Rain is a great one for wet walks.

Lula bye-bye (which is from curly headed baby by Paul Robeson) my nana sang to her babies, my mum to me and my sibling and I've sang to all of mine. Because I'd not heard the original song until about a year or so ago our version is slightly different to the original now. So if your baby was called Rosie you'd sing..

Rosie, Rosie, Rosie, Rosie bubby
Do you want the stars to play with
The moon to run away with
They'll come if you don't cry
Rosie, Rosie, Rosie, Rosie bubby
To your mummy's arms you're creeping
And soon you will be sleeping
Good night Rosie bubby good night.

And each child gets a turn of being sung to.

I also sing close to you by the carpenters and somewhere out there from the American tale.

Daytime songs include

Stop! Nappy time!
Nice nice baby

And any other ridiculous 90s song I can shoehorn into the day.
