Applying for 2 A-levels and a diploma?

I never did college, I did an access course years later, so I don't know the best course of action for this.

child is applying to colleges.

Is it ok/normal/accepted to apply for 2 A-levels and 1x diploma?

Or is it best to stick with 3 A levels?

You'll get up to date info on Secondary or Further Education.

It is fine to do 2 A levels & a diploma. Colleges offering A levels will be relatively picky about what diplomas they offer so they are likely to be reasonably well respected.

But make sure the A levels and the Diploma don't overlap in content too much as if they do they may not be counted as separate qualifications for uni entrance. e.g. You wouldn't do A level PE and BTEC PE, and A level computer science & BTEC IT might be iffy (I don't know the contents).

If they are aiming for top unis, then check entrance requirements for possible courses before finalising choices.

What is 'best' depends on ability and interests and aspirations of the young person.

Is the diploma level 3 or level 4?

That's really helpful thank you.

At this point he isn't showing all that much interested in uni, and I just want him to stick to college so I'd really like him to do what really interests him.

The diploma is criminology, my first degree is in criminology and I know just how Micky mouse that is, so I don't know if it really is worth much but DS feels pretty confident that it will hold his interest and doesn't really want to steer from that.

Otherwise PE and geography so definitely not much chance of an overlap. 😁

Level 3, and so are the A-levels which was something that made me think it might be ok...

DD did two a-levels
and a BTEC subsidiary diploma (I think) and got into a RG university with an A, B and distinction *

it’s absolutely fine.

TeenDivided · 28/09/2022 19:43

My only comment is that those 3 subjects seem pretty disparate to me. That isn't necessarily a problem if they will hold his interest, but they don't seem to be pulling together very well?
(Ps. What is criminology in 2 or 3 sentences? Has he thought about sociology?)

Cornishmumofone · 28/09/2022 20:20

Is a subsidiary diploma, foundation diploma, diploma or extended diploma (worth 1, 1.5, 2 or 3 A-levels)? If it's a diploma or extended diploma, it might be a heavy workload.

Oh I hear you.
And I've suggested Sociology.

But this is what we are here for, at this point I'm just grateful he is kinda of interested.
