Anyone else had their new fuel bill?

Doubledenimrocks · 28/09/2022 11:48

I read a few tweets which referred to a drop in people's fuel bill. Ours arrived this morning and it has gone up by £1600 a year. So around £150 extra a month. This is on top of the £250 extra we started paying in April. - a total of £550 per month or just over a quarter of my annual salary. I suppose I should feel relieved that it isn't the extra £500 that was projected but I'm really bitter that there are energy companies out there profiting of our misery.

Anyone else had their new bills recently?

What do you mean by new bill? The cap rates don't go up until October so no one can have had a bill at those rates yet

What tariff are you on?

BinBandit · 28/09/2022 12:02

Yep, my "anniversary is the beginning of September. I'm on standard variable rate with EDF. This time last year I was on £155 a month, went up to £185 and then to £268 in April. Now I've had a refund of £175 and monthly DD has gone up by another £20. When our last deal expired, the only fixes available to us were over £400 a month.

We don't have a smart meter but have been submitting readings so no estimates involved.

Our equivalent use last year was higher, we've used about a third less gas and about a quarter less electric so I guess the lack of huge increases also reflects that.

We are 3 adults in a 4 bed , 20 odd year old house. 2 of us working from home. I don't use the tumble drier and we use a shower not the bath. Just to give a bit of context. I like warm living areas and bathrooms but we like the bedrooms cold. Unused rooms are set at frost guard.

I had a letter today to state my "new price as a result of the Government Energy Price Guarantee". We have a standard online tariff of 48.12p for electric and 27.22 for gas

I'm on a fixed tariff but eon said they're cutting my dd from £90 a mth to £24 a mth from October. No idea what on Earth they are thinking! I do have some credit that's built up over summer but not enough to get us through winter on a DD of £24 a mth.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/09/2022 12:05

For the same usage your bill this winter should be about double what it was last year, but would increase further if you were on a very cheap fix last winter, or have debt to pay off.

But you won't know what you bill will be until you've used the energy, so you must be talking about your direct debit, which isn't the same thing are there really people who still don't get this.

Have you checked whether the £550 is reasonable? What is your proposed annual energy cost (and no, it isn't necessarily £550 x 12) Have you looked at ways you can reduce your usage? Does the proposed DD amount take the £400 into account? Is there any debt on your account? At the moment, you should be slightly in credit so you don't get into debt over winter.

Look into things further to work out whether the £550 is the right amount and if not, you can ask your supplier to reduce it. If they won't and it's too much, you can go to the Ombudsman, but you first need to know how much you should be paying, which you might not be clear on at the moment.

BTW, it's not the energy companies making money. They're selling energy to us at a huge loss and are being propped up by the government. You need to be looking at Putin, the global markets and lack of investment in sustainable energy production and use to see who's causing bills to rise.

Because they've factored in the £67 /month government credit?

OK, not a bill but confirmation of the cap rates

Everyone who is on a variable rate will be the same give or take a little for regional variances. Is that the answer you were looking for?

Those are the daily standing charges. If you're on the price cap tariff, your unit rates should be about 34 p for electricity and 10 p for gas. It should also give an annual price projection based on what you've used in the past.

BinBandit · 28/09/2022 12:29

My monthly DD does not take account of the £400. for EDF customers on a DD, that will be sent as a refund to your bank account but how it will be refunded depends on your supplier and your plan. So don't assume that it's already taken account of in your DD, it might be might not.

FlowersareEverything · 28/09/2022 12:30

I’ve received an email to say what the new standing charges and price per kw will be and their estimate of my yearly cost based on the last 12 months kw usage. I’m on standard online variable and it will be 27.838 per kw and 49.64 daily standing charge. They’re saying my annual bill is estimated at£364 more this year, but in reality it shouldn’t be as much as I’ve actually drastically reduced my usage in the last few weeks. I think, using my new calculations with current use, my current DD will be more than enough and I may even end up with a rebate. I’m now submitting monthly readings to keep myself on track, I can increase/reduce my DD if necessary.

BinBandit · 28/09/2022 12:35

Obviously everyone will have different tariffs and regional variations, but this is how ours are changing which should give you a ballpark indication

Current rates
Electricity (ends 30 September 2022)
Unit rate: 27.84p per kWh
Standing charge: 49.65p per day

Gas (ends 30 September 2022)
Unit rate: 7.336p per kWh
Standing charge: 27.22p per day

New rates
Electricity (starts 01 October 2022)
Unit rate: 33.76p per kWh
Standing charge: 50.67p per day

Gas (starts 01 October 2022)
Unit rate: 10.277p per kWh
Standing charge: 28.48p per day
