What can I do with Greek style salad cheese?

I've had one in the fridge for about 2 weeks unopened. Tried it today and it's tastes bitter in my salad. Any other ways I can eat it?

Any feta recipe should work on Google

NotLactoseFree · 28/09/2022 10:21

So basically fake feta? It's almost always bad. But will be much nicer if it's cooked or partly melted. So eg stir it into roasted vegetables or crumble over a tomato based pasta sauce.

Use it on pizza.

Or go big and do something like a spanakopita.

Use it like feta. We make spinach and feta puff pasty pasties or put it on pizza with spinach and egg.

Put in a casserole dish surrounded by halved cherry tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar (and a sprinkle of chilli flakes if you like a bit of heat) bake at 180' for 30 minutes

Get a pan and fill it with pasta (we use rigatoni and farfalle) and chopped tenderstem broccoli. Mix boiling water with vegetable stock and a bit of tomato purée and pour this mix so it's just covering everything. Bring to boil on the hob then pop that straight in the oven too for 30 minutes

Mix the baked feta and tomatoes into the pasta and serve immediately- it's beautiful and we have it most weeks. Only takes about 5-10 mins prep too as it's all in the oven mainly so its quick and easy. So delicious.

Rigatoni or farfalle (any pasta would work but these work best imo!)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/09/2022 10:25

I love fake feta - all the saltiness without the sheep or goatiness. If you really don't like it in a salad, it's good in a pea, onion and fake feta frittata.

MrsFionaCharming · 28/09/2022 12:31

Put it in a whizzer with some Greek yogurt, olive oil, garlic and honey. Eat as a dip with pitta.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 28/09/2022 19:04

Wrap it in foil, ideally with some black pepper and a drizzle of olive oil, then bake for 10 mins. Crumble or cube and serve with roasted veg. Or slice onions finely, cook down till caramelised, spread on puff pastry and crumble cheese over before baking

PixiePirate · 28/09/2022 20:35

Crumble it over roasted butternut squash and rocket salad and drizzle with balsamic glaze.

BeanieTeen · 28/09/2022 20:38

I might taste better cooked, so any cooked feta recipe really.

BettyOBarley · 28/09/2022 20:39

Stuffed peppers with rice and the cheese on top roasted in the oven

DDivaStar · 28/09/2022 21:04

Lovely in a lamb casserole. Chop into cubes and add 1/2 hr before the end of cooking.

Purplelion · 28/09/2022 21:35

Throw it away and buy some real feta 😂

heartbroken22 · 28/09/2022 22:11

Thank you guys. Used half of it in puff pastry with spinach and cheddar. It definitely tastes better when cooked although I'm getting used to the taste uncooked. All the puff pastry was finished so win win. Thanks guy I might try the others later this week.

Really nice if you crumble it onto roasted med veg about 10 minutes before the end of cooking. Then stir it in and serve.

Lookingoutside · 28/09/2022 23:26

Mash it on hot toast with a drizzle of honey and some mixed seeds.

Amarette · 28/09/2022 23:29

Also good with avocado on toast. Brings a nice salty sour twang to the creamy avocado. I add chilli and seeds but will also try with honey now, sounds good!

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 28/09/2022 23:32

Adjust your salad. Add ingredients that counteract and work with the flavour of the cheese.

I would do warm roasted butternut squash and beetroot with chilli flakes sprinkled on, mixed leaves, red onion, cherry tomatoes and pomegranate seeds.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/09/2022 23:33

it works well in scrambled egg (stir in at the end) with coriander and chilli. I mean feta works well like this, and I think a lot of the thinness of fake feta would be disguised in the mix.

bookbuddy · 28/09/2022 23:33

Roast it with tomatoes, rosemary, thyme & pepper serve with green olives on crusty bread or with pasta 🍝
