6.15am on payday and I’ve not been paid.

Usually it’s there when I wake up.

Got a lot going on and I’m really stressed out about this.

Bills go out today and I need my pay to be in my account.

I don’t need this anxiety.

Fingers crossed it soon drops! Do you work for a big corporation or a small company?

Are there are indications that’s cash flow could be a probkem?

girlmom21 · 28/09/2022 06:57

Has this ever happened before?
Is it a big company?
Get onto payroll first thing.
Any colleagues you can check with whether they've been paid?

Belledan1 · 28/09/2022 06:58

Do they pay it by bacs as sometimes it can be a bit later.

Silverpossum · 28/09/2022 06:58

Can you see your salary as 'pending' in your bank account?

HouseInChaos · 28/09/2022 06:59

It won't help for today but is there a way you can change the date your bills get paid in future to the 30th instead so it's not such a tight deadline?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/09/2022 07:00

Colleagues haven’t been paid either.

Massive company.

They did this once before, it was sorted by 10am.

I previously worked for five years at a place where the pay was frequently late, forgotten or wrong and now I get anxiety about not being paid.

I changed my bills so they come out on the 1st of the month as this happened to me once.

Gensola · 28/09/2022 07:09

Who do you bank with? Nationwide did this to me last year - they had some sort of tech mess up and all payments in and out were stopped for two days. I left them after that as it was so stressful and saw in the news it happened several more times.

Amazongirl9 · 28/09/2022 07:09

Is it actually due today or is this just the date you generally seen it land in your account? Our payroll is officially due on the last working day of the month but usually we get it a day or two earlier.

Noln · 28/09/2022 07:10

This sometimes happens with DHs pay. Usually it's in from midnight but sometimes it's not there til 11am on the day. They insist it's not them it's the bank, but I'm always paid on time (in fact it often goes in the evening before).

I'd just ring as soon as you can and ask what's going on. If they've put it through you'll have peace of mind it's coming. I agree with pp though, I've pushed all bills to at least a week or so after payday just in case.

Gingertail · 28/09/2022 07:13

It depends on the type of payment they’ve done.

A BACS bulk payment (normally set up two days before) hits the account early.

However, if it’s Faster Payment (set up prior to today) it will normally be in around 8.00.

Comefromaway · 28/09/2022 07:16

I would never have bills going out the same day as I’m paid.

I operate payroll and we use Faster Payments but sometimes the money doesn’t show until later in the day. Our contracts state that payment should reach the account by close of business on payday. It’s never gone past 12 noon though.

missbipolar · 28/09/2022 07:18

It's not late until after 11:59pm today- it's probably best to change the day your bills come out

Summersdreaming · 28/09/2022 07:19

I worked for a company like this before. It would get to nearly 5pm and nothing, I'd have to go and ask the directors if they were making the payments. Once, I told them I needed to buy fuel on the way home, and if we'd be getting paid soon and the cheeky cow offered to lend me £20!! Er no, just pay my salary! It's a huge red flag for a company unless there is a genuine unforseen emergency.

Summersdreaming · 28/09/2022 07:22

^btw I know that technically the payment can be made at any time of day, but if you want your staff to have any faith in your company you have the BACS ready and the money paid first thing.

Not true.

The shithole bank my company uses pays by BACS - I know because I set the payments up myself. When you receive it depends on what YOUR bank is, and that's not always consistent.

Sometimes not til 6pm. Pain for me because everyone is nagging me about when it will arrive.

OP - I recommend that you move the payments back so they come out over days 1-5 of the month. Gives you time to reshuffle if needed.

gettingolderandgrumpier · 28/09/2022 07:59

I work in payroll and you never pay employees late ever . If it’s frequently late they either have cash flow problems or they are shit employers or both. Find a new job that pays on time .

It's not late - it's only 8am.

Ifailed · 28/09/2022 08:06

I realise this isn't helping you now, but I agree with PPs, move your payments out by a couple of days so you won't feel so stressed next time your salary is a bit late.

thecatsthecats · 28/09/2022 08:35

I'm interested to know how you find a job that pays on time. They're hardly going to tell you in advance.

Then you leave , honestly in all my 25 years I’ve never had a job that has paid me late , wow you have low expectations if you think that . Suppliers yes can wait employees noooo . The company has no cash if they can’t even pay employees huge red flag find another job .

mountainsunsets · 28/09/2022 08:59

@gettingolderandgrumpier having all your DD's set to come out the day your salary is due is poor financial planning. You should always leave a bit of leeway just in case of an emergency.

Unless OP's contract says "you will be paid prior to x time on payday" (which is very unlikely) then her salary isn't late. They have until midnight to pay it in.

alloalloallo · 28/09/2022 09:10

What’s in your contract about pay day?

Our contracts state that pay will be paid by bank transfer, by close of business on the last working day of the months, so 8am wouldn’t be considered late.

I do the bank transfers just after 9am. We tried setting up the transfers in advance but their money didn’t go in until much later than if I just do the transfers manually when I get in.

I’d def move DDs away from pay day if you can, however, my bank (Lloyds) gives you until 3pm to pay money in before they bounce DDs anyway

Ugh. I’ve had that. Sat at my desk hitting refresh on the banking app because I wouldn’t have enough petrol to get home. International household name too. 🤬
