Tonsils out as an adult? How bad is it

Basically that... how painful? How straightforward is it?

Also recovery how long does that take?

I'm worried I'm going to start choking on everything as there's nothing to guide the food.

Probably not how it works.

I had mine lasered for tonsil stones.

I only had 2x 15 min sessions. Not very pleasant feeling but no pain, and felt absolutely fine afterwards, just a minor sore throat. Would really recommend.

I think it usually costs about £1.5k, but mine was covered with insurance.

Meseekslookatme · 28/09/2022 13:54

Don't reconsider!
People are being honest regarding the pain, but I actually remember it being quite an easy 2 weeks to be signed off for.
To get rid of the terrible infections I used to get was life changing.
Honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Mama_bear · 28/09/2022 14:08

It's awful but totally worth it. Had it done 15 years ago, not had a sore throat since.

I was 39, and it was ok, but felt sore and exhausted for about 5/6 days after that it was ok. I lost a bit of weight too.

greenbirdsong · 28/09/2022 14:14

I had it done at age 30. It was absolutely awful.
Couldn't swallow any painkillers. Throat and tongue so swollen - along with that but that hangs down at the back of your throat.
Couldn't lay down as it felt I was choking. Couldn't swallow anything except sips of drink.

The plus point was I lost 10lb's haha.

The worst pain was the first 7 days, then it started to ease by about day 10.
Day 14 was just a sore throat.
However I did have a disturbed sense of taste for about a month.

But seeing as I was getting tonsillitis repeatedly and had such enlarged tonsils I was snoring like hell it's so much better now they're removed.

Good luck!

Had mine out in my 20s best thing I ever did uzsed to be so ill with tonsillitis but fine since. I didn`t find the pain too bad it was easier than the quinzy I used to get. Was in hospital 2 nights.

Trulyweird1 · 28/09/2022 14:17

I had mine out in my 50s. Sent home with cocodamol and strict instructions to wake up and take repeat dose every 4-6 hours ( can’t remember exactly).

I did that, and the absolute worst thing was the constipation from the painkillers.

It was fine. Good luck.

blindmansbluff · 28/09/2022 14:31

Had mine out at 18, beat thing I ever did.

Painful for about a week then I was back in the pub on day 8 🤣 Totally doable with painkillers

mattwhit · 02/10/2022 22:08

@Hellosunshine1993 did you find it helped with breath? Having them
Removed?

Hi

i had mine out because of tonsil stones. I was 32 at the time. I kept on top of the paracetamol and neurofen and had a humidifier on at night. I ate a lot of ice lollies!
it’s really not too bad, if you have been through child birth it’s a walk in the park compared to that! I did stay in bed for 4/5 days though and just rested and kept my fluids up.

TropicalShakedown · 02/10/2022 22:15

I was early 20s when I had mine out. I thought tonsillitis was worse but I did use to have bad bouts of it it (including couple of hospital admissions)

Sunbird24 · 02/10/2022 22:18

Mid-thirties - was horrendous, especially as I got an infection and ended up back in hospital for another 3 days on IV antibiotics and morphine. But it was absolutely worth it.

Sunbird24 · 02/10/2022 22:20

Oh, and someone from work phoned me a few days after my op to do a welfare check as I’d gone to my parents to recuperate, and insisted on speaking to me in person… idiot.

notprincehamlet · 02/10/2022 22:57

Early 40s here. It was fine. Don't let the painkillers wear off or you'll struggle to swallow them and you'll feel miserable. Sleep propped up for the first few nights as everything's swollen and it makes breathing easier. Eat food with a bit of texture (like mashed potato) as it helps to stop big scabs forming (which can cause scary bleeding when they fall off). Drink lots (I found using a straw helped). Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Don't look - it'll look, smell and taste like something died in your mouth!

mrsbyers · 02/10/2022 22:59

My husband had his out not too long ago , he was back at work two days after the op and just took the odd paracetamol

Puttybell · 02/10/2022 23:08

35 yrs, not comfortable, but home the same day and paracetamol was Enough. I’d had horror stories so was presently surprised that it really wasn’t so bad. Now I don’t have constant infections, it’s bliss. I don’t catch every bug going around any more either. So worth a few days discomfort after years of fighting an infection.

Yes it did. It got rid of the horrible lump in throat feeling too.

sessell · 03/10/2022 02:31

Had mine out in my late 20s. I honestly don't remember it being that bad. I remember the ice cream and salt and vinegar crisps they recommended I eat to help my throat heal! Dental pain is much worse. I havent had any throat problems since. It was worth it.
