I was sat waiting for my daughter in my car parked in a private car park Sunday, when a child from the next car opened their door and hit my car. Accidents happen, and I know there's a lot of worse things out there but it left a dent and paintwork damage which will rust over time so I wanted to get her details. The mum backed out but I walked in front so she stopped and got out. She walked round my car, pointing out damage on another panel (it was bird dirt). I told her it was just the dent on the drivers door I was concerned about which I'd seen happen as I was sat in my car when it got hit. She said it was already there. I asked for her insurance and she looked uncomfortable and said she couldn't remember who it was with and she'd look when she got home, left me with a number. I took her reg details. There's no CCTV in the car park and I've called the number she gave me later that day, and yesterday, left a message with my number and just asked if she can call me back with the insurance details. With no response from her, today I reported it to the Police 101 and they sent me a text saying the driver and vehicle are covered by insurance – not sure how they could know this as I only gave the reg – the driver could be anybody – not even a license-holder. The damage is about £300, my excess is £200. If I contact my insurers, will they be able to trace the insurers from her car reg and proceed that way? It sounds like she will deny it anyway, and it’s my word against hers, though she didn’t see it happen and I did. I’m just not sure how to proceed from here as I don’t want to lose my no claims and I can’t afford the £200 excess, let alone the £300 to fix it myself, but I don’t want the car to rust either. If it report it to my insurers can they seek redress from the insurance company covering the car even if she denies any involvement? As I said, accidents happen and she's probably no more in a position to fix it than I am.
