Wool duvet, worth the investment?

Thinking of getting one to beat the cold a little this winter. Please let me know any recommendations and your thoughts if you have one?

Shearing sheep is not cruel and does not involve slaughtering them. Wool is 50% carbon and it holds that carbon for years. Its 100% biodegradable, and sheep can make it out of grass that can be grown on soil too shallow to support other crops.

Exactly this. There is no way I'd buy a down/feather duvet due to animal welfare but shearing sheep is not cruel.....wool is far more ethical.

I have an environmentally sound one made out of recycled bottles and it is incredibly warm - too warm in fact! And no animals were harmed in its production.

Surely recycling plastic (energy and water intensive) is still less environmentally friendly than using a natural fibre which is fully biodegradable once it comes to the end of its very long life? What will happen to your duvet once you're finished with it?

I imagine it could be recycled again at the end of its life - it's this one here:

I did use to have a wool one but I just didn't like it - it was thin and didn't feel right and my partner loathed it. So I gave it away and got the big fluffy recycled on - for some reason a fluffy duvet just feels better.

alpinia · 27/09/2022 11:31

Baavet bargain box duvets here too! Love them but agree with previous posters that if you like a big fluffy duvet they might not be for you.

MrsTruss · 27/09/2022 11:33

I have had one for years now from Baavet. It didn't smell. Make sure you don't buy a cheap one with a plastic liner as that defeats the purpose.

MrsTruss · 27/09/2022 11:34

I also have their pillows.

FiddleFigs · 27/09/2022 11:34

I have a Woolroom one, and I much prefer my old down duvet. I don't think the wool one is anywhere near as warm (I bought the same tog weight as my old down duvet) and certainly doesn't have the same feeling of cosiness.

I can't bring myself to buy a down duvet (for animal welfare reasons) and I get itchy and sweaty when using a synthetic duvet, otherwise I'd have replaced the wool one by now.

usernamealreadytaken · 27/09/2022 11:35

@whirlyhead unfortunately not currently, although obviouslyfuture innovations might change that.

"Duvets cannot be recycled; they are produced from synthetic materials that are not recyclablee*. These synthetic fillings cannot be recycled; they are not environmentally friendly because they are manufactured from synthetic fibers."

Devon duvets here and wool pillows - perfect temp all year around 👍🏿☘️

Ooh. Talk to me about wool pillows please? 🙏🏻

Paddingtonthebear · 27/09/2022 12:17

Love ours but they take a little while to get used to as they are flat and not all puffy like most duvets. We have had a spring/autumn warmth one from soak and sleep for years. A few years ago we then bought a lighter summer warmth one . You can tie them together to make it warmer for winter. Soak and sleep often have discount offers and we rate their stuff, their “feels like” pillows are really nice too.

Paddingtonthebear · 27/09/2022 12:18

Didn’t get on with the wool pillows I got from tk Maxx though!

VenusClapTrap · 27/09/2022 12:19

I got the wool room summer weight one because I get too hot but don’t feel ‘secure’ under just a sheet. It does help with that, although it’s no silver bullet. It’s also warm enough for winter with my lovely velvet bedspread added on the coldest nights.

I'm another who wouldn’t go back to feathers due to the animal welfare aspect.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 27/09/2022 12:28

Wool pillows are flatter than acrylic filled. They need a bit of pummelling every so often to get the ‘fluffy’ feeling. Very therapeutic.

BarrelOfOtters · 27/09/2022 12:56

I got a soak and sleep one. it's brilliant for menopausal night sweats - regulates the temperature. I really like it.

RunAwayNow · 27/09/2022 15:34

I love our baavet.

There's a big 'but' though. Because a wool duvet is quite flat and thin, it's really difficult to find a duvet cover that fits without having lots of extra room in it. So I've had to get used to long flappy edges of unfilled duvet cover, which really bug me. If anyone has found covers that fit well, I'm all ears!

DareDevil223 · 27/09/2022 15:52

I wouldn't buy any other type of duvet. I have a Baavet which is now in the spare room and then when we got a bigger bed I bought one from Devon Duvets. Love them both, pricey but worth it as far as I'm concerned.

MrsTruss · 27/09/2022 18:24

The other thing is that the natural wool colour is not pure white so I put a cheap white cover on it before I put the "proper" one on especially if a white or light colour.

aramox1 · 27/09/2022 21:36

How do you clean them? Not that I ever clean the down ones either

lightlypoached · 27/09/2022 21:42

We got an alpaca one. It's lovely and light but warm.

I do use a blanket with it too.

VenusClapTrap · 27/09/2022 22:18

Oh god yes. Does my head in.

I have a Woolroom pillow as well as the duvet.

It’s grand- not as firm as I’d like but you can buy extra wool to top it up, I just haven’t got round to it yet.

Much better for the environment than synthetic ones though.

Fozzleyplum · 28/09/2022 07:42

Woolroom have just sent me their latest catalogue. The 25% off code (applies to all full priced items until 31st December) is AUTUMN25.

Mum5net · 28/09/2022 10:07

Have just spent my second night under my 'Woolroom Classic warm'
Honestly, its not especially warm.
I found it comfortable and 'non slip' but it's definitely only an Autumn weight.
DH agrees.

I wouldn't recommend it for keeping you warm and saving energy.

DoAllMyOwnStunts · 28/09/2022 10:53

I have 3 wool duvets from the Baagain Box part of the Baavet website.
I love them. Great customer service etc as well. I love all the info about the sheep.
I also have a wool pillow. I had to play around adjusting the amount of wool in it but it's great now. And a silk pillowcase for my skin and hair!
