How long is your reception age dc walk to school?

My DS started school this month, it takes him and DH 35-40 mins to walk to school as he's only got little legs and is a slow walker. It would take an adult 25 minutes.

Do you think this is too far? I do- and would prefer DH to take DS on bike or on bus, but he thinks it's reasonable. The first thing DS asks when he wakes up is if he can go in the bike, and my husband says no.

He brings him home in bike at end of the day but thinks the walk 'does him good' DS says his legs are achy and he's tired.

0.7 of a mile, takes us 20-25 mins (but stop and talk to neighbours). I can do it in just over 10 mins on the way back.

I’m surprised people think this is way too far! Children nowadays get so much less chance to exercise and also so much less resilient to challenges. We always walked to and from school over a mile and we’re so fit and healthy. I think it really helped us become healthy adults and have a better attitude towards exercise and sticking with it. Children should be on the go all the time it helps them sleep. The walk is also a brilliant opportunity to engage in conversation another art being lost and learn about road safety. Children are so fussed over nowadays they really need to learn to toughen up. I’m surprised anyone is so inclined to use a car in these environmental / high cost of fuel days…. Walking is the best exercise you’d be crazy to stop such a good habit your child will soon get used to!

My niece walked just over a mile to school and again back home in evening. My sister walked there and back twice a day even in snow. My niece got used to it. By 6 she was hiking up mountains for hours with them. It does not hurt children to walk. It makes their legs stronger. This child only has to walk one way and will get used to it.

Look carefully OP says child wants to ride in bike not on bike so in bike being peddled by his Dad, not peddling self.

Exactly. This is what I started with mine and they too are now hiking at weekends with us and very active. Start small and it helps build up to bigger and better things!
riding a bike to school can be pretty dangerous near busy roads and also to other pedestrians on the pavements. I’d save bikes for the weekend and get them using their legs for walking and use the opportunity to chat with your child! It’s free and healthy 😊
