What types of things would you consider to be luxuries?

Having more than a couple of takeouts a week?

Going on holiday every year?

Flying private jet with your dog.

Polycotton!

I would consider weekly takeaways a HUGE luxury but we do go on several holidays a year so it's all about priorities.

When I cut back its massages / facials / new clothes / posh toiletries that go for me first.

As a family it's meals out / days out.

Choice is a luxury.

So me and my husband earn fairly well, but we choose to live below our means, have a manageable mortgage less than we could afford which allows us to have occasional take aways/days out/sometimes buy things we fancy but always with careful consideration. We buy most of our clothes from Vinted or supermarkets and they don't get thrown out unless they have got holes in!

I have my hair done once a month and that's my main luxury.

I would consider these to be luxuries:

  • Bi-weekly nail appointments (everyone seems to have them! like they're a necessity / normal expenditure, I've seen people struggle to pay their bills yet always have a fresh set of acrylics on...depends on your priorities I suppose)
  • Beauty appointments/Massages
  • More than one meal out a month
  • More than one holiday a year
  • Designer clothing/trainers (never interested me but some people seem to spend fortune on branded clothing)
  • Botox
  • A Waitrose shop
  • Doing a big shop at M&S (outside of Xmas!)
  • A pizza from Dominos

A few holidays a year. Keeping up with self care/ beauty treatments. Going out for nice meals and family day trips/ activities.

HowVeryBizarre · 27/09/2022 08:30

Business class flights every time you travel.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/09/2022 08:34

Any take out, ever
A holiday where you sleep in a building rather than a tent or caravan.
Music lessons for the

I'm still astonished and grateful than my dc have enough uniform for a week without washing.

whiteorchids44 · 27/09/2022 13:39

Flying private or first/business class
Luxury holidays like safaris etc..
Having a nanny

Oldrockingchair · 27/09/2022 15:10

I’m always amazed at how much money people spend on stuff like nails, beauty things etc. i guess it’s just what you’re interested in but to me those are a total luxury and only something that millionaires do, not ‘normal’ people. Plus I think it looks grim anyway, which is just as well as I can’t afford it 😁

Also takeaways - we have maybe 2 a year if that? So much money for indigestion. Also haven’t eaten meat or fish for several years since the DCs became veggie and now I look at the prices (especially when people are saying they are struggling with food costs) and think they are crazy for still eating meat & fish when it’s a very easy way to cut your bills.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 27/09/2022 15:16

Heating, only having one job to worry about, waking up every morning not dreading the day ahead.

Gingerkittykat · 27/09/2022 15:21

Alcohol (I am always amazed when I see bottles of booze as a standard part of someone's weekly shop), paid TV subscriptions (I don't even have a TV license, just watch non BBC on catch up), a cleaner, a dog, long haul holidays.

I do have a gardener (my neighbour who is a professional gardener but I pay him a cheaper rate) because of disability and also eat take aways about once a fortnight so other people would see it as a waste of money.

Going on holiday once a year. Not been for three years. To be honest at the moment everything is.

This is me right now tbh. I have just spent £20 on some make up. But feeling really guilty about it

NoodleSnow · 27/09/2022 15:46

To me, a luxury is anything absolutely not essential. Any take away or meal out. Any holiday. Any book bought, rather than borrowed from the library. Any subscription services or memberships. Any event tickets. Real coffee. They are all luxuries, even though I can usually afford them. I try to appreciate them.
