Jaw pain after filling - normal?

Had a fairly nasty filling on Friday afternoon, required several injections including a 'nerve blocker' because I kept getting breakthrough pain an took a little while. After a few hours the numbness wore off and I could feel a lot of generally throbbing pain including quite a lot in my jaw and cheek but treated with painkillers and thought it would fade.

The tooth itself feels pretty good now, some sensitivity which the dentist said to expect and a bit of a metallic taste still but nothing worrying. My jaw is still very painful though. I can't open it past about 2cm and it hurts to try. It hurts to touch on that side of my face and yawning is very painful. Painkillers help. Is this normal and how long might it last does anyone know?

That doesn't sound normal

I’ve had that, sometimes it can ache and be painful but if it doesn’t settle down you could ask if that’s normal
use to be awful following orthodontist treatment too

I had this and it was an infection and I needed antibiotics. I went back to the dentist and they did an X-ray and could see the infection and prescribed the antibiotics.

Ahh, that's a bit worrying. I wonder how long I should leave it before calling the dentist?

I’d ring tomorrow

It could be TMJ, rest your jaw as much as possible and take anti-inflammatories. Unfortunately, a dentist caused mine having a wisdom tooth removed a few years ago.

Cheeriooos · 26/09/2022 21:42

Urgh. I was really hoping you'd all say that it's normal.

I would say its normal. I've had that after back teeth extractions. The pain wore off after a week.

lilroo87 · 26/09/2022 21:46

I had this after my last filling (all my others I've never had the anaesthetic) and it was really tender for a few days but then went. I think it was just my gums tender after where the dentist did the injections

@feathersandslats same happened to me did you ever recover
