So we were involved in a car accident nearly 2 weeks ago now, driver pulled out of a side street onto the main road colliding with us.
we have been given a courtesy car thankfully, but the company have been pretty hopeless with sorting out actual car.
we were offered 4600 for our car, Ford kuga 2011 but we only bought it 2 months ago for £6400
we have rejected the offer, gathering information to show the car is worth more as it is pristine condition for its age and average mileage.
I am just wondering how much do they charge to buy your car back? Has anyone been in this position, we would like to buy it back but I’m wondering how much it will cost.
is there a certain %?

That's way too little for what you've described so not surprised you're upset!!

Gather all the information you can including adverts for the same vehicle currently on sale. Give evidence their value is not accurate.

It's probably all automated usin algorithm somewhere. You can try arguing the toss but they likely look at the average price for that vehicle, that age.

If had paid over the odds and given £10k for it, would you expect that much from your employer? You'd need to be able to show it was worth more.

Insurer not employer

ItsDinah · 26/09/2022 16:38

Insurers typically write off cars if the repairs cost more than half the car's value. The Financial Ombudsman's office deals with disputes about valuation and you can get info. on its site. You may be able to get the car back from the insurer. It depends how badly the car was damaged.

The insurers should have told you what Category of write -off the car falls into. If it falls into Category S, or N you can get it back. You would have to arrange and pay for it to be repaired. Category S means it has structural damage but could be repaired. You could have trouble with getting it insured and it would not be safe to drive until you had it professionally insured. Category N is non structural damage and once you have it repaired will probably be easier to insure without too high a premium hike.

Policy excess -if this has been deducted from the proposed settlement - you may be able to recover the amount from the other driver if you were not at any fault in the accident.

We haven’t been told what category write off it falls into. No one has even come out to see our car, it is still on our drive at home.
we had to send pictures, we are waiting for an engineer to contact us but apparently there is a back log.
my partner thinks it is just the bumper that needs replacing so we can’t see how it will cost that much to replace.
we would be happier if we were offered 5.5k and then we could buy it back, do you think we could buy it back for less than £2k?

I thought the amount you are paid for a write off is how much it is now to buy that car, same age/model etc. DH bought his car a couple of years ago as a cat S I think it was, it was written off by the insurers and he was paid a lot more than we paid for it initially as I assume they looked at how much the cars were worth now.

ItsDinah · 26/09/2022 18:17

Try telling the insurer that you do not accept their assessment that the car is a write off. It is a bit late in the day for this as it looks as if you've accepted it's a write off but are only disputing amount of pay-out .You only see a cracked bumper, but insurer may think there will be damage you can't see to the steering ,suspension,or even the chassis, which would be costly to fix. You'll probably have to arrange your own expert to check the car.

We got more as I called the insurance company and spoke to the woman every day for updates I think she authorised the amount we wanted as I drove her mad with my calling.
Same thing happened to our car, we bought it new, and It was pristine (Dh was an anal mechanic ) Van pulled out across the road Ds was driving and hit it.
Keep calling and bugging them get what it's really worth. Pull up more cars for sale same as yours was similar milage and condition. Send them in.

They always try to undercut. We had the same. Car bought 8 months ago for £4k, they offered us £2300. Back and forth and third and final ended up being an offer of £3k which we accepted.
