How to cheer up sick dd who has to stay in hospital for a week or so?

My lovely dd (4) was admitted to hospital yesterday evening with appendicitis Sad. She is at GOSH and her appendix had burst so she Is on iv antibiotics for a week, in case of sepsis (considering she got to hospital at 7 they reckon her appendix had burst at about 6, because that’s when her pain had subsided and had surgery at 9:30, quite late I thought, but she had to be transferred from our local hospital to gosh due to medical conditions, it is quite likely) my question is: what can I do to cheer her up? She’s feeling so miserable and I haven’t seen her since yesterday as I have covid so mums with her, but I am negative now and am going to see her after lunch. Thank you all, deck

GOSH will have fabulous playrooms - DD was in hosp twice with sepsis and both times the playrooms were fab (different hospitals). Until she's feeling fit enough though, stuff she can play with in bed - a new teddy, some colouring pens/paper (prob can use from playroom). Bubbles cheered DD up no end and we watched a LOT of Peppa. DD was often ill and I always found she preferred things for younger kids when she was ill. I bet you can't wait to give her a big cuddle!

Are you allowed to take in a blanket or pillow from home. Perhaps a family or pet photo. Perhaps some stickers books of she likes that kind of thing? The thing she probably wants most is company. I hope she recovers quickly.

My four year old had a lego dots bracelet and key ring in hospital post operation. She didn’t do much of it as she slept more than we expected, but she completed it on a flight, it worked well without much space or movement.

Thank you all. I think I will pop into the works and get her some sticker books and things like that, along with her iPad, cuddly and blanket, she has nothing as we didn’t actually expect her to be admitted! And a picture of ddog.

Shes likely to feel quite miserable for a few days and more bless her, sounds awful and often children can struggle with eating again and sometimes get worse before they get better so initially, sleep, with her favourite nightie, teddies, Blanket etc movies on iPad. I’m sure GOSH have lovely play specialists who can give arts and crafts and things too. So you shouldn’t need to buy anything. Sometimes flannels for their foreheads and for washing - bed baths to freshen up if needed are nice.

But I think you will be the person she wants most so try to rest when she does, eat and drink and look after yourself as it’s tiring being in hospital.

Thank you all. I’m with her right now and I’ve never seen her so poorly. I just want my baby back. But I am a staying with her now until discharge, and she is so pleased to see me. I am currently crying into my coffee, it’s going to be a long night, she’s fainted twice and vomited 5 times and I’ve only been here for an hour. She is enjoying watching blippi on the iPad though, and informing the nurses about it.

If allowed, a blanket or pillowcase from home - keep it close to you so she can smell you on it, will be comforting.

Would some "Get Well" cards from grandparents and aunties and uncles help? It might be fun for her to open them and have some cheerful things to look at.

Poor thing, it sounds like she's had a nasty time. Flowers

So my sister is a doctor at GOSH and has popped a card down to us already, and dmil has to and mum so we are on the case with that!

just a little update. Dd has sepsis, she looks so poorly and I just want her home my baby but I’m glad she’s in hospital so she can get treatment. But she is allowed to see dp so he is here as well now. Sad

Aw what a shit time you are having, have a virtual hug.

What about a new soft toy?

Or a toy medical kit? www.therange.co.uk/toys/fancy-dress/role-play-and-play-pretend/children-s-toy-medical-case/

Actually you can get a simple stethoscope for about £5, if she is taking an interest in what the staff are doing.

I'm sorry your poor little boo has septis. She will probably feel better after a few days there, it is good that you can stay there with her. Hope today will be a better day for her as the medications kick in. Good luck.

sashh · 28/09/2022 04:45
