Energy Question

TurtleSpurtle · 26/09/2022 10:25

If I don't spend 60 pounds per month on Electricity / Gas - then will the Government handout money be kept as credit on my account for the future or will it be removed?

I think you’ll be lucky if you don’t end up spending the money the gov are giving out - my electric and gas bill has just gone from £80 to £404 (!) with EDF per month

Given that the standing charge alone is nearly £15 pm, you'd have to be an extremely low user to not use £66/67 pm in autumn/winter, but if that's the case I would expect that it will just sit as a credit on your account.

Most people will use several times that amount, but it's a universal payout, so they probably won't be concerned about the minority with comparatively small bills.

TurtleSpurtle · 26/09/2022 12:39

It definitely won't be that per month - hence the question. It's so low that we've been investigated twice in the last year over it.

Hence why wanting to see if the 60 pounds would stay in the account or if it would be deducted at the end for whatever is left.

I’m with British Gas and they have said that if your monthly payment is less than the £66 rebate we will be getting, it goes as a credit for future bills. But each energy company seem to be handing the rebate differently so have a look on their web site, I’m sure the info is there.

@Ilovetocrochet Thank you - I am having a look now but it seems so unclear.

How are your energy bills so low?

TurtleSpurtle · 26/09/2022 19:05

We are really careful, spend a lot of time outside of the house etc.

You need to ask your energy provider, there's no guarantee that they will all do the same thing. Best to get it from the horse's mouth.

Thanks, I was hoping there was a concrete answer people knew already. Seems like it may be a case of us being penalised for being sensible though from what i have been reading.

EDF has said they will credit the £66 rebate to the bank account that your direct debit comes from. Presumably they are doing that with all direct debit customers?
