Has anyone ever binned off Turkey Etc and done this?
i’m not really interested if in theory you wouldn’t like it, so please only replies from people who have done it and did they like it? Older kids so Xmas magic Etc not an issue

Most years we have an Xmas curry takeaway, since the DC were little. Sometimes we've eaten in the restaurant but usually prefer to eat at home. It's now our Xmas tradition.
I love a roast dinner but no one else in our family really does, seems pointless for my benefit.

Goldmember · 26/09/2022 03:49

The only issue is my Mum doesn't like Indian food so we've not been able to host her which is a shame.

TimeToGoUpAGear · 26/09/2022 03:51

@Goldmember I feel a bit sorry for your mum. Surely you could have come up with a non roast tradition she could join in? Or at the very least, only do it every other year? Does it not bother you never getting to host her?

dalmatianmad · 26/09/2022 03:55

Did it last year. Loved it. The meal was amazing. Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant and it just felt so different having a lovely curry on Christmas day.
I'm sadly working all this Christmas!

lamaze1 · 26/09/2022 04:09

Not a curry house, but yes we have bypassed the traditional dinner and gone somewhere else for Middle Eastern food a few times. Once many years ago when we were kids.

Was great. No one getting stressed in the kitchen. Everyone relaxed. No dishes to clean up. We're talking about doing it again this year.

leavesonthegroundsoon · 26/09/2022 04:45

We did one year. It was good and I'd probably do it again. Went for a curry, was very busy. Santa came round with little presents for the kids. I didn't miss the traditional Christmas dinner. It was a lot cheaper than paying to go out for the traditional Christmas dinner too. It was £25 per head for a 3 course meal.

lickenchugget · 26/09/2022 04:50

Sounds amazing!!

Roasts are so boring.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 26/09/2022 05:29

We had a takeaway curry for our Christmas Dinner last year, but it only saved the extra work on Christmas Day, as I still wanted my favourite meal of the year on Boxing Day, which is cold turkey, bubble and squeak (cooked fresh and from scratch), stuffing, pigs in blankets, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, and pickles!

So it made a change, but I think that we will probably revert to normal this year, as I don't think that the less hassle on Christmas Day made up for the extra hassle on Boxing Day - but that is only because I still wanted my favourite meal on Boxing Day! As long as all your family are happy to try it, then why not, and if you do go to a restaurant and have any left over food, ask for 'doggy bags', portions are so big in Indian restaurants that there might be enough left for your Boxing Day at home.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 26/09/2022 05:45

No curry restaurants in our area, but instead of traditional Christmas ham dinner we have a "Finger Food Buffet" with foods that can be eaten without silverware.
Deviled eggs, pickles, cheese and crackers, cookies, cupcakes, sliced fresh fruits, raw veggies and dip, etc. Set up on the sideboard and family serves themselves when they feel hungry.
New Year's Eve we order in a Chinese buffet.

Igmum · 26/09/2022 05:48

We don't but friends have done it for years and love it. Go for it OP.

ChutneyVirgin · 26/09/2022 05:54

It’s the veggies too. Such a hassle

We used to go to the curry house most years until we had kids. I think its one of the best options for eating out at xmas. We went for the first 2 Christmases of our eldest too then stopped, mainly because a toddler is not much fun for anyone in a restaurant. Mine are 3 and 6 now and we are just talking about if we should go for curry this year.

Yes! And your fridge is full with one meal, when it could be stuffed with so many nicer things!

PuttingDownRoots · 26/09/2022 07:47

We never to the big roast on Christmas day. We decided when eldest was a baby it was far too much hassle when we could be doing family stuff like playing with the children, helping them with presents etc.

We did go for curry one year. It was non festive but quite fun.

Mostly we BBQ. Yes in the UK (or whichever country we are living in!). Yes its cold... but we can eat inside, there's a fire as well. Our neighbours find it amusingly bonkers apparently, and sometimes drop by for a Pig in Blanket.

mdh2020 · 26/09/2022 07:50

We have pizza with all the sides - onion rings, battered mushrooms and potato wedges. We much prefer it and there’s no hassle. Also, preferably, we are away, staying in a cottage at the seaside.

ihatethefuckingmuffin · 26/09/2022 07:54

We haven’t done a traditional Christmas dinner for years. Have been to various restaurants, takeaways and even a bbq.
Less stress, less money and still have leftovers 😂

the first year was because I was seriously ill and none of us were in the mood for it. Had a back up of frozen stuff just in case nowhere was open.

Clawdy · 26/09/2022 08:02

Probably our best ever Christmas lunch was at our local Indian restaurant. They did offer a roast, but we all went for the curries.

WingingIt101 · 26/09/2022 09:16

My parents did it last year whilst we were with DH family and they loved it!
The curry house they went to offered either a set menu of curries or a Christmas dinner menu. Can't remember if they had to pick in advance but they said it was great and a good excuse to get out of the house (although this obviously isn't exclusive to having a curry!!)

Hoppinggreen · 26/09/2022 09:20

Every year for the last 5 years (Covid permitting).
Its just us and 2 teens and we all enjoy it. It’s a really good restaurant that we visit regularly anyway and while it’s £75 each there plenty to take home and eat on Boxing Day too.
None of us like a Roast Dinner anyway so why eat on on Xmas Day? We have a special late Breakfast (sometimes invite family) and then head off about 3 then home to lie on the sofa and chill. I don’t really drink so driving isn’t an issue and we get to eat food we like with no prep or tidying up

That’s actually one of the reasons we do it 😀

AnotherMrsAverage · 26/09/2022 09:23

A friend did that one year and loved it. It's a high class Indian restaurant - have been there and it's fine dining, beautifully cooked and presented. Go for it if you love Indian food!

toodizzyizzy · 26/09/2022 09:50

We love our Christmas curry in our family. It makes Christmas so much easier and it's still special as the restaurant we go to make us feel very welcome.

Imissmoominmama · 26/09/2022 09:56

We did last year, and have already booked for this year.

It was really nice- there were 10 of us- youngest is 15. We had a mix of dishes, meat, veggie, fish, that we’d chosen, and we took our own champagne and beer (they aren’t licensed). The restaurant gave us lovely glasses to drink out of.

We’re very lucky to have an excellent Indian restaurant just down the street, so it was a very relaxed affair.

We also did a secret Santa, so we each only bought one present. It felt like a wonderful antidote to the High Street excess of Christmas.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 26/09/2022 10:01

Yes we have done it a fair few times inc last year, it is lovely and relaxing. Sadly I have been summoned to my parents house for lunch this year (they are lovely really and my Brothers and I rotate) otherwise i would book it again.

AuntieMarys · 26/09/2022 10:03

We go to our local Mediterranean restaurant on xmas day.
