Following on from the UK 'mini budget'...
In the aftermath global economists have heaped criticism on it, the £ has fallen in value (maybe as a consequence of insider trader), some Conservative MPs have criticised it. Labour rhetoric says they would reverse some of it (the abolition of the 45% tax band).
However Sturgeon has an actual decision to take. To follow suit or to stand by the current tax differentials (which were 1% overall and now are 6% in the top bracket).
If she follows suit she completely nullifies any socialist idealism. If she doesn't the finger will be pointed at the tax differentials thereby undermining any hope she had of independence.
If you were (God Forbid) Nicola Sturgeon, what would you do now?
Here are my thoughts:
I would match (or somewhere close to match) the stamp duty changes so that homebuyers were not out of pocket - it's a big difference to a small number of people.
However, I would be bold and I'd stick with the current income tax rates. The changes make a small difference to a big number of people (and a very marginal difference of more money but less impact to a very few).
