Pub recommendations Chilterns/Bucks? 🍻

Can anyone familiar with the Chilterns AONB general area in the countryside not too far off the M40 around High Wycombe -ish please recommend a nice pub suitable for two families to get together for a lunch?

Not wanting a chain/hungry horse type place, but great food and drink that's good quality without getting pretentious. Ideally somewhere that does more variety than just a roast carvery on a sunday as some of the group wouldn't eat that

Ideally we would like somewhere with a climbing frame/play area (kids age 8-10). But failing that a nice garden for running about in also good.

If there is a nice route for a post-lunch country walk in the immediate vicinity that's even better.

We've identified that this is a good half-way area for us to meet at but are totally clueless about choosing a specific place, so really hoping that a kind MNer who knows the area sees this!

Many thanks!

Hi
I live in Bucks. I would consider going to Marlow. It is a short drive from High Wycombe and is lovely. There are lots of places to eat (Marlow Bar and Grill is my favourite, also Tom Kerridge's The Hand and Flowers is apparently well rated). There is a park with play equipment in the town centre (Higginson Park) and you are right on the River Thames for a walk afterwards.

Alternatively the Squirrel pub in Penn Street might fit the bill. It has a garden, with swings etc. I haven't been for a while but have always enjoyed the food there. Then you can go for a walk nearby in Penn Wood. www.richardgower.com/blog/pennwood

I hope you have a great time.

I was about to suggest exactly the same places as the poster above.

Alternatively you could come off at the Beaconsfield junction of the M40 (one on from HW). There's pubs in the old and new towns (although parking can be a pain) or a 10 minute drive to Old Amersham which has lots of pubs although most don't have big gardens.

Sorry forgot to add that there's some really nice walks in Old Amersham plus a kids' playground.

But Penn and Marlow would be good options.
