Nintendo switch

VamonosPest · 24/09/2022 21:57

I’m trying to get organised early for Christmas to spread the cost. I had planned on getting a Nintendo switch for my DC … I have 3 DC, do I need any attachments/extra bits to enable all three of them to be able to play with it together? TIA

Extra controllers, it only comes with two.

Dazedandconfused10 · 24/09/2022 22:01

Extra joy con's as it only comes with 2.

Choose any games carefully as they may say multiple player, but one of them is a flying hat or a rubbish accessory which does FA and someone will get bored & start a fight.

Mario cart 8 is the only 3 player game that we have I think.

But that said, the switch is fantastic.

pointythings · 24/09/2022 22:21

Get extra controllers. Make sure you get Mario Kart 8 and then look at other multiplayer games. Depending on the age of your DC, Gangbeasts may be a good one to get as it allows up to 4 players. But it is a little inappropriate for younger players.

Hedgehogsaremything · 24/09/2022 22:24

If you're going to take it away with you/ outside the house then a carry case is useful. As is a screen protector.

My boys like a proper controller to use with it rather than the joy cons or the controls on the Switch itself.

Re games. Animal Crossing caused a few issues as only one island per game can be created and so it has to 'belong' to one and the other two can only visit, they can't have separate accounts. Caused some arguments...

New Zelda game out soon will be popular here.

coodawoodashooda · 24/09/2022 22:26

I had this situation. I got 3 original switches with no extras. Family bought games. Recommended on here to buy from tesco. Proved good advice.

VamonosPest · 24/09/2022 22:32

Thanks all for the advice. Point taken on the game choices GroggyLegs, doesn’t take much for them to fall out! Animal Crossing sounds like it could be a problem though, I wonder if 3 switch lites better than one proper switch between them?

3 switch lights might mean having to buy a game multiple times to play together as you can't use additional controllers on a switch light. Mario party is great fun and games like tools up and moving out are all fun multiplayer games you can play on one switch

Dazedandconfused10 · 25/09/2022 00:12

Mario party, Mario kart, overcooked, moving out, there are tons of multi player and Co player games.

milkysmum · 25/09/2022 00:15

The switch lights can't be connected to the TV so if they want to play on a big screen then definitely the original switch.

BlackberryCat · 25/09/2022 00:51

We got one of the proper Switches with extra JonCons but ended up buying 2 more the next year. My kids do play with them a lot. Sometimes individually and sometimes together on the TV.

I appear to have written an essay 😁 please take what you like and leave the rest as they say.

How old are your DC?

I am now very pro switch and (considered, supervised) gaming. My experience is from getting the Switch, Minecraft and Animal Crossing for my then 6yo in early 2020 with next to no idea of what I was getting into. I quickly realised a second switch was needed for a second child in the family which I'll explain.

It seems as if the main cost is the Switch itself but after a while you may find you spend a lot on games, extra memory and subscriptions. When I compare the theoretical cost of after school childcare one day a week for a term or a couple of family days out including meals I'm in the right ballpark for the cost of enjoying Nintendo as a hobby. It doesn't make it affordable just a way of thinking about the value!

If you're not into gaming, as I wasn't at all, you might think of it as indoor play equipment like a swing or trampoline is outdoors. A one off purchase, taking turns and sharing will be fine. It can be more like a bike and trainers though. Ideally everyone needs their own and they'll get to know the feel of the steering, trainers will mould to their individual feet. Learning to use a joycon (several buttons, motion control and a joystick) really well takes practice and, for example when fishing in Animal Crossing, there is real motor skill involved not just pushing a button. (When you get to Zelda, Subnautica and Cuphead...)

All this makes it extremely valuable and fun and there's a ton of different learning opportunities, exercise and the chance to be creative. Gamebuilder Garage, brilliant Lego games, Just Dance, Ringfit.

I can't imagine a situation where it would be better to have a Switch lite. If you can't take a big plunge and get 3 Switches I'd suggest considering getting two - one for the 'kids' and one for the 'grownups' so they can share as much as possible eg Mario party - good for 4 players as long as you have 4 joycons - but you can let one child 'borrow' the grownups switch at times. In the long run if everyone takes off with it you could get a third and then allocate one to each child. If not you have more flexibility with 2 switches than 3 switch lites in my opinion.

You can put several profiles on each Switch so whichever one they are using each person has their own profile to play on.

I'd also seriously suggest you buy the 'grownups' one as soon as possible and start using it. It will be worth knowing how it works - you're the battery that will make it go at Christmas, you need to know how it works and how the games work. You could all have a wonderful time but that might depend on being able to deal with frustrations quickly.

There are really beautiful worlds to explore - Zelda Breath of the Wild for example - and fantastic music, YouTube has some great orchestral concerts of game music.

If course you may know a lot of this already. Happy gaming 🎮

Thanks all for the advice and especially Doable for the comprehensive reply.

The DC are 6, 8, 10 if that makes any difference? None of us are into gaming and I was absolutely viewing it as an indoor purchase equivalent to trampoline etc. Lots of food for thought here.

Mario party a must! We've had many a wet day in playing it's really good fun!

Banjaxx · 25/09/2022 09:18

Clear rules and boundaries!!! We bought one for our two last year and basically lost them to minecraft for the vast majority of this year. I’ve banned it in daylight hours at the weekend now as it was a constant source of arguments any time we wanted to do literally anyway other than let them sit glued to it… it’s crack for kids!

NoodleSnow · 25/09/2022 09:45

Definitely the Switch has much more high quality play potential and versatility than Switch Lite. We have one Switch shared between the whole family (adults and children) and while it has caused a few arguments in the past, it’s actually been a really good way for the children to learn how to negotiate and to fairly share something. I use the parent controls app, so unless they all agree something that everyone thinks is fair, the Switch doesn’t get turned on.
If we had a Switch each, I think they’d spend a lot more time isolated in their own games.

Do you know what kind of games are they interested in?

Mammyloveswine · 25/09/2022 12:12

My boys have one each...they love them! They also like different games...we did have them sharing but it didn't work so then got another one for the younger one for his birthday!

Def think carefully about games and research which work for 3!

VamonosPest · 25/09/2022 15:59

No, not yet. I need to look into all this. Sounds as though Super Mario is a must!
