Does anyone have a dog that is constantly peeing and sniffing on walks?

I have a 9 year old Springer Spaniel and as much as I love walking him, he constantly pulls on the lead towards grass/vegetation etc so he can sniff and pee.

Of course it’s normal for a dog to pee on a walk, but he keeps pulling me over to grass verges to do tiny pees when he could have had one only two minutes ago and then he continually pulls so that he can sniff the grass. He could spend about 5 minutes sniffing before he decides to have another pee.

It really makes walking him less enjoyable because I spend more time trying to stop him pulling me than actually walking.

is there any way I could try to stop this behaviour? And I don’t mind him sniffing the odd time, but it’s too excessive at the minute!

The walk is for your dog, not you. Allow him to do what he pleases - read the doggy news (sniffing and laying scent for the important reasons others have cited) - then exercise at another time for yourself. His walk is not another task to be ticked off in your routine. Let him off the lead and be a normal dog. Why should he be ‘trained’ to deny his instincts?

You've gone and got yourself a professional sniffer, channel it before you leave the house, and look at breed specific training/fulfilment

My female dog will do a pee then our cocker spaniel just has to pee on top of her pee. Sometimes they do it the other way around too and if she is too quick she gets her head peed on.

You know what they say...
If it sniffs like a dog,
And if it wees like dog,
Then it's a duck.

No that's no right! 🤪

You know what I mean though.

cbatopainttheshed · 24/09/2022 21:40

He's 9 years old.. how long have you had him? You appear to be a very inexperienced do owner. Not a criticism just wondering. 10 minutes sniffing will tire them out as much as 30 minutes brisk walk! I remember when researching before I got my dog , I saw some advice that said remember it's THEIR walk not yours. Half an hour a couple of time a day to take a slow walk and let him sniff and mark isn't a bad thing, it's just letting him be a dog!

Georgeskitchen · 24/09/2022 21:41

This has to be a joke post surely.
Sniffing and pissing is basically the whole reason for existing for most dogs!!

Me - I can’t seem to walk to do much walking because he’s constantly sniffing. It’s madness.

There's a time for them to enjoy their sniffing and peeing - that's what they like to do and it's good for them as other PPs have said. Then there's a time for them to walk calmly on the lead with you. It's all about training, start again from basics.

Ooohyeah · 24/09/2022 21:45

Remember the walk is for his enjoyment so let him have a good sniff in peace. I have a spaniel but I honestly couldn’t imagine walking him on the lead all the time I think he’d be bouncing off the walls! Could you try teaching him proper recall so you can enjoy off lead walks together?

DramaAlpaca · 24/09/2022 21:45

Oh come on, OP. That's normal behaviour for a dog and especially for a springer spaniel. That's what they do!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2022 21:45

That’s what dogs do. He needs to sniff to know who’s been where - it’s called P-mail.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2022 21:50

Plus of course he needs to P-mail everybody else back.,

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2022 21:51

It would be rude not to!

NellesVilla · 24/09/2022 21:53

OP, he is a dog. Hth.

At least yours doesn’t try to eat cat 💩 all the time!!

ilovepixie · 24/09/2022 21:56

He's a dog. That's his job to sniff and pee lots!

soddingspiderseason · 24/09/2022 21:56

I have a spaniel too who does this on every walk. Yes it's irritating if you want to keep marching onward, but it's like Facebook for dogs - they exchange so much information by that little drop of wee. It's just what they do, and he enjoys it, so I let it be and have chilled out about it.

RedHelenB · 24/09/2022 21:57

Walks and sniffs are the highlight of ddogs day. Makes me happy to see him happy .

CrowFriend · 24/09/2022 21:58

Embrace it! Put a good podcast on and expect to stand around whilst he has a lovely long shuffling old sniff and pee.

EllaPaella · 24/09/2022 22:01

Someone once told me that taking a dog for a walk and not letting them stop and sniff would be like us going for a walk and not being able to see the beautiful surroundings. New smells are exciting for dogs and actually they get a lot of intellectual stimulation from it and it can be just as good for them as running/chasing a ball.

Rogue1001MNer · 24/09/2022 22:03

Op

These people clearly know NOTHING.

Post in the dog house. You'll get some advice there, I'm sure 😉

Celticandco · 24/09/2022 22:03

You sound like a crap owner tbh, poor dog

RoachTheHorse · 24/09/2022 22:05

I no adopt the notion that when I'm out with my dog the walk is for him. I let him stop and sniff and pere and generally snout about as much as he likes. It tires him out and settles him way more than a brisk walk. Perhaps just go with the flow and let your dog be a dog!

If I want harder exercise I tend to go out without him.

This is where you’re going wrong.. the walks are for him, not you. It’s the one time he gets to really do his doggy stuff!! He’s not seeing because he needs a wee. He’s seeing frequently to mark his territory and leave his scent; he’s sniffing to see who else is hanging around. It’s like you going to a community group but being dragged round the outside of the room and not allowed to speak or greet anyone there!
Give him his sniffari and let him enjoy it. Get a very long lead if you really can’t bother giving him 30 mins a day or whatever to just be himself as nature intended. X

DawkinsOldSpot · 24/09/2022 22:06

Two of our dogs do this (labradors) we just let them sniff and pee because it’s what they like to do and it’s just part of being a dog

Tubbyinthehottub · 24/09/2022 22:09

We sometimes do a 'sniffari' which is when Ddog is allowed to choose the route and do all the sniffing.

BadNomad · 24/09/2022 22:11

Walks are about more than just physical exercise. They're supposed to be for stimulation, too. Sights, smells, textures, tastes. It makes them happy. If you're not happy, you can go for an unstimulating walk by yourself after.
